About Here & Elsewhere

It is twenty thousand years in the future and our signals have been received, but it is too late for life on earth. The hyper dimensional crystals have arrived to a blasted wasteland. They can see the beauty in our ruins, and something of themselves in our striving. They must first clear away these desiccated remains, and send some of it to their museum. They reconstruct this planet in their own image and restore a harmonious balance.

Here & Elsewhere was inspired by the architecture, location and story of the venue itself. It is a beacon of crystalline creativity growing like a mushroom out of the rotting, industrial landscape of Bushwick, Brooklyn, NY. The piece is intended to be a meditation on archaeology, history and the inescapability of misinterpretation in reconstruction. It is also meant to shine an optimistic light on the inevitable decline and destruction of our civilization and species. The earth will reabsorb our ashes into her womb and we will become part of whatever comes next.

This project is a subtly interactive music video. Your gaze is the only input. As you look around you help the crystals grow and transform the world. There are no goals and no points to accumulate.

There is more than meets the eye here. I was a bit irritated at being forced through the various "stages" and into the ending, which comes rather abruptly... but I went with it and took on another round.. much the same. On the third I went off of what I assumed was the target only to find another take on the objective and what I assumed was interactive or not. The effects are nice, and quite calming for being pseudo apocalyptic looking (even though it seems that these events may very well be after some sort of end of days themselves) I was pleasantly surprised by the variety of discoveries, yet annoyed on the short time allowed to discover them in each phase. I would like to see a bit more time, or an explore mode, added to the various experiences.. as it stands you barely get enough time to register how cool some of the efx really are before you are unceremoniously pushed into the next one. That same mechanic, however, is what tempts you back into the game to try and uncover yet another "something" before the fade to black. Having questioned even downloading it, I can now look back and say that if I knew what I know now there would have been no question. I do not mean to overstate…

miserable tracking, always in floor and movement is 1.5x exaggerated.

Here & Elsewhere is a free VR experience. It worked on my HTC Vive and Index system, looked ok, played ok, sounded ok. You help the crystals with clearing and transforming the landscape. Try it, if you looking for a short vr experience.

This was definitely an experience that makes you go "Oooh...yeah!", "Huh, look at that!", and ultimately "What the ♥♥♥♥ was that?". Head movement only controls, which was at least interesting the way that they used it in the game, but I the major drawback to me was being stuck in the floor in several stages of the experience. I would prefer not to be a floor.
