Heritage - A Dragon's Tale

Great platformer, plus it has a dragon. Most of the abilities are fun and useful, and the game is challenging enough to make you want to use them. I did find myself choosing to run past all the enemies instead of fighting them sometimes, because I did not enjoy fighting so many strong enemies. The instakill pits were annoying. They are way more dangerous than the enemies because they delete all of your health instantly, while when fighting enemies you have a large amount of healing methods. Everytime I died to a pit, I ended up trying to run through the level as fast as I could because I didn't want to play it anymore. Despite that, I enjoyed playing the game overall.

Beat the final boss today. Very fun and occasionally challenging game that wears its inspiration on it sleeves (Zelda 2 and I think Shovel Knight?). The story was simple but good, with a nice twist in it. I did run into a couple bugs that I had to work around, but overall a good and fun experience (Also, the dev is active in squashing these bugs). If you like 2d action adventure games, this is a good pick-up!

Heritage - A Dragon's Tale is a surprisingly delightful little game. It wears its inspirations on its sleeve, that of Zelda 2: Adventure of Link and more than a few nods to Shovel Knight. Now, that's not a mark against the game, but rather just the best way to describe it. Flame, the player character, possesses extremely on-point controls - this might be the first game that I've encountered where giving you a double jump out of the gate is not a curse, but rather a blessing. Flame's attacks have a nice quick snap to them, pushing you back from your target in lieu of giving you a longer windup; while your ground speed and jump speed feel basically perfect. Not once in the time that I played did I feel like the game ate any of my inputs or did I experience a death that I didn't feel was completely fair. The music surprised me, quite honestly. Within about a day or two I was scrounging around trying to see if anyone had scraped the music files from the game, but the composer (Eliteferrex) has the entire soundtrack up on their Youtube channel. It shares a bit of DNA with Zelda 2 which I liked but does feel like a game that comes into its own. While not perfect the game is enjoyable to see through to the end I feel. I went into this game without prior knowledge (I don't even recall seeing the trailer, I got recommended this by someone else and knew I had to buy it just based on the promo picture and description) and just WOW this is an amazing game, I expected it to be really good but it surpassed that by a wide margin and this is going to be a game I'd wanna talk to people about a lot if it wouldn't spoil story moments and lore (because those are really gripping and impactful when experienced without prior knowledge). I'll still be recommending it a lot for sure though, just without the spoilers! This game is going up there with my absolute favourites of all time! I was worried that the story would result in an ending I didn't like so I was tempted to look up how it ended to save me the worry, but I am legitimately so glad I didn't! This game does absolutely nothing new, which is fine, because the ground it retreads it does well, and the effort put into it shines through... well, most of it, at least. If you enjoyed Zelda 2: Link's Adventure and Shovel Knight then there's absolutely no reason not to grab this. A couple of the puzzles are somewhat obtuse, unfortunately, and the pacing of certain aspects of the game is a bit odd, and some of the encounter designs can be frustrating, but none of the flaws are bad enough to ruin the experience, which is worth the full price of admission and then some.
