Hero or Villain: Genesis is a 350,000 word interactive novel by Adrao, where your choices control the story. The game is text-based, and while it has some artwork in it, your choices control entirely the outcome of the game. Will you hunt down villains to the last corner of the planet, join a group of fellow heroes (or villains!), defeat New York's criminal mastermind, or even replace him?

- Choose from dozens of powers. You can pounce your enemies with the power of your fists, strike them down with hellfire, take control of their minds, dodge their attacks with your super-speed, or rewind time to learn from your mistakes.
- Build your own gadgets, improving the quality of your armour or the weapons mounted on it.
- Make alliances with other heroes, and attempt to find a side-kick that works with you.
- Play as male, female, or non-binary, and romance many of the other characters!
- Several illustrations to enhance your experience.
- Variety of different game paths, with over two dozen different endings.
- Several different difficulty settings. Play as a mighty invincible hero, or just somebody only slightly more powerful than an average human.

The definition of a whole lot of nothing, and there's this really weird fetish of Japanese culture - it's not bad to enjoy Japanese culture but some of the responses to a fight against ninjas in one of the routes was just... weird to say the least. The game feels more like throwing a bunch of darts on a board and seeing what sticks (nothing).3 found this helpful
This feels like a guilty pleasure. The writing is so bad that it's good—like a campy Silver Age cartoon. Prepare to laugh out loud at how bad some of the lines are. Good times. That's the mindset I suggest you approach this with. In all seriousness, only get this one on sale after you've gone through the better hero CYOAs, like Fallen Hero and Community College Heroes.1 found this helpful

The good: Interesting character creation and cool power set. Can be a great power trip if you are on a good roll. Decent writing if you take it as a story rather than a game. Great illustrations. Captures the old-fashioned super-hero comics energy very well. The bad: Prone to rail-roading, it has a story and ending in mind and it will not allow you to interfere with that, you cannot kill the steel aeronaught because they need her for the epilogue. If you do decide to kill the Aeronaught, she will simply be revived off-screen by a machine that restarted her heart somehow, meaning all your effort was for nothing. It doesn't have a very good difficulty system, the higher difficulties reduce the scale of the powers you got, meaning that you are only a little more than a normal person at max difficulty. Normally, this would encourage creativity and ways to work around the powers of and exploit the weaknesses of your enemies, but instead it mostly just results in enemies who smash you over and over, you feel less like a friendly neighborhood hero and more like a punching bag who can't save anyone and just hops around waiting to be pummeled. And even a punching bag tends to be better at…
