Heroes of Myth

Reviewing (mostly) every game (or DLC) in my library, part 592: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️☆ (9/10) Am I crazy, or is [i]Heroes of Myth[/i] excellent? I didn't have high expectations tbh; I wasn't a fan of the author's next work, [i]Specters of the Deep[/i], but this one is a super solid work. It takes fantasy tropes and usually plays them straight (except for the major one), but in a way that's pure fun? It has solid writing, complex characters, a fascinating plot and lore, hugely meaningful choices, and an epilogue that's full of choices. It's just a superb work all around! In [i]Heroes of Myth[/i], you play as the typical fantasy hero, the one who saved the world, and all that jazz! Actually, that's a lie. The prophecy that told of your victory was one you made up with your friends; you simply used your illusion magic to lie to the world. Life is good! Except ... everything in the false prophecy has begun to come true. Once again, it's up to you to save the world again—hopefully, for real! No spoilers, but I thought I knew where the plot was going, but there were so many (realistic) twists and turns I was entertained the whole time. I completely recommend this game. I hard a hard time getting through this story, tbh. I found its world engaging and unique, and the premise fun, and exciting. But it quickly became apparent that any choices I made would not matter to the other characters. The side characters at the beginning of the story treat you like garbage regardless of how the main character has defined their relationship, (Why give me an option if it doesn't matter). I wanted to play a good person who let their selfishness get the better of them and was trying to improve and yet I had multiple characters tell me I was the worst person in the group despite having been convinced and outright forced to do work by those same characters. I hate every character in this game besides 3, not counting the mc. The vitriol I feel over this game can't be measured. Genuinely I have never had a game respect the choices I made less, and still preach at me about how I'm wrong. I wish I could refund this.

It's fine, but I felt like it was a bit too easy? In the best Choice of/Hosted games like Robots or the Infinity Saga, there was this constant tension that was electric behind every choice. Failure at some point was guaranteed. In Heroes of Myth, I got the best ending on my first try? Maybe I was just lucky?

Overall i think the story was pretty good! It was really enjoyable finding out all the mysteries. Some characters i particularly disliked but i grew to like the others overtime. Being stat checked for dialogue options is a big meh, i had to cheat stats so i wouldnt sound like a bumbling fool. It gets pretty demoralizing to get punished so often for something so trivial. Without going too much into spoilers, i was pretty annoyed with one particular character who kept on expecting me to follow their orders without telling me anything. Though the way i got back at them in the end was pretty cathartic so it was still pretty nice. Played this a long time ago so my memory might be a bit shoddy but compared to the other choose your own adventure games i played this one was one of the better ones. Not one of the best but thats a pretty high bar to clear.

Overall, I do feel this is a decent game. The replayability, IMO, is a bit limited, but it also isn't as bad as it could be. Ability to restart chapters and go back to a previous chapter is NICE, and for the most part, I enjoyed how the story was laid out and written. I think my personal biggest gripe is that the relationships, friendships and romance both, don't seem to be explored very well at all. Descriptions for appearance, as well as the ability to choose our own, are EXTREMELY limited...but this is another minor thing I'm just used to in COG products. It's still a pretty good game/story with obvious fantasy elements. I'd love to see a part 2 of some kind to tie up loose ends and expand more with the relationships and potential fallouts of choices.
