[h1]POLY HEAVEN[/h1] Fallen Hero: Retribution is an interactive text-based novel (or interactive fiction, if you prefer) and the second installment in the Fallen Hero series. The story still revolves around superheroes, but this time there’s much more action, romance, and drama. It took me about 10 hours to finish my first playthrough, which feels like a perfect balance - it leaves you wanting more while still being long enough to feel satisfying. Overall, I found Retribution surprisingly entertaining. It may not be the most unique concept out there, but it executes its ideas really well. I especially enjoyed the variety of romance options and the ability to make your puppet more independent. [b]It’s an easy recommendation from me.[/b] I’d even say that Fallen Hero is worth trying even if you’re not a big fan of the superhero genre. Nothing feels over the top, and the writing makes it very easy to get into. [b]World[/b] The story still takes place in the familiar setting of old Los Angeles, now known as Los Diablos. In terms of worldbuilding, the focus remains largely local - introducing new factions, expanding on locations within the city, and adding a few new major characters.…

Fallen Hero reminds me a lot of a good, long, angsty fanfic. I mean this in both a good and bad way. It's self-indulgent in its emotions and character interactions and lighter on plot and forward momentum, which results in a delicious in-the-moment experience, but a lingering feeling that not a lot actually happened for the word count. The mysteries and plot threads that it sets up are fascinating and engaging, but two books in are still being set up. The individual installments lack a sense of resolution when they end, although I still have high hopes for when the series is finished—I suspect the finished series will be best considered as a single, long story, rather than a series of four books, if that makes sense. I'd recommend it for people who enjoy character angst and relationship-building, with a side of tantalizing backstory mystery, and don't care so much about tight plotting and pacing.

Malin is an amazing author. The man understands that the reader (me) ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ hates fluff and unnecessary exposition. No. You are Sidestep and you want to be a supervillain for whatever reason you think justifies your crusade. I really appreciate how each scene serves a role in developing Sidestep's relationship with the characters. There's never not some tension, positive or otherwise. I mean, how could there be when the role you play is diametrically opposed to theirs? Retribution stews in constant conflict and is much better than your average IF for it. You can start a polyamorous relationship with your chrome-skinned shark mind GF and your Spanish-swearing, lightning throwing old partner who still hallucinates talkiong to your dead ghost. You do this by having chrome-shark GF nearly bite your lip off, then roast her infront of Ortega, causing their brain to bluescreen, then Argent will kiss them, and you get to bite Ortega's lip in reciprocity. Their response to this is offer a sincere prayer that this isn't the beginning of the zombie apocalypse and then runs away. Yes, I highly recommend.
