About Choice of Magics

Your magic can change the world, but at what cost? Battle dragons, skyships, and evil Inquisitors, as you protect your homeland, conquer it, or destroy it forever.

Choice of Magics is a 550,000-word interactive, post-apocalyptic fantasy novel by Kevin Gold, author of our best-selling game, Choice of Robots. It's entirely text-based, without graphics or sound effects, and fueled by the vast, unstoppable power of your imagination.

Thousands of years ago, the ancients destroyed civilization with five schools of magic. Each spell comes at a terrible price. Glamor charms your adversaries, rotting your body from the inside. Divination reveals faraway secrets, exposing your own secrets to others. Automation gives objects the spark of life, destabilizing the climate. Vivomancy can heal or change living things, with bizarre side effects. Blast your enemies with Negation energy, forming permanent clouds of deadly fallout.

As a young scrounger of antiquities, you hope to build your ruined world anew with these rediscovered spells. Now you must decide which of these magics can transform your post-apocalyptic society, and what you'll risk to bring hope and light to your kinsmen.
 • Play as male, female, or non-binary; straight, gay, bi, or ace.
 • Design your own pet, hatch a baby dragon, and build your own golems.
 • Win a war, win the crown, or win your best friend's heart.
 • Transform an evil Inquisitor into a talking tortoise, out for revenge. (Eventually.)
 • Collect magic items: rings of power, an alchemy set, a “light sword” (wink, wink)
 • Romance your village's geeky mayor, a goofy swordfighter, or even the queen.
 • Help a stuffed monkey to repaint all of the murals in the Cathedral dungeon.
 • Test out the mayor's new board game.

Can you bring the world back from ruin and shape a new society? Use your magics well, and you could become as a god; use your magics poorly and destroy the world all over again.

Reviewing (mostly) every game (or DLC) in my library, part 620: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️☆☆☆☆☆ (5/10) Yeah, I gotta be the only person not to enjoy Choice of Magics, the incredible Kevin Gold's third work. It came as a surprise to me, too! Choice of Alexandria and Choice of Robots are two crowning jewels of ChoiceScript, and I thought Choice of Magics, with its longer word count, would knock it out of the park. But nope. What struck me was both the pros and cons of Choice of Magics were ones I pointed out in his past work. Which is actually kind of a sweet thought, now that I think about it. Gold's writing is still so uniquely him. His strengths are the same: player choice, worldbuilding, and mechanics. However, his flaws are even more pronounced: stilted characters, flat writing, and abrupt pacing. Super abrupt pacing that took me out of the narrative so strongly that I could not return. That I got a bit annoyed. Sigh. Still, thank you to the staff, as usual, for a free copy!
Pros:
✅ Magic system. The aforementioned magic system is honestly fresh and got me interested quickly. Put simply, every choice you make has consequences—a…

THE choice of games-game. Seriously, there is no other game to this label with this high amout of impactful choices. Exept for a few cosmetic ones and necessary for the story, no choice here is superflous and has imidiatly impact and consequences. There are a lot of different paths to take, with different outcomes depending on the choices in the path. A few events alwyas happen, but how they turn out can be hugley different dependig on choices. The game is rather short, with one playthrough rarley longer than an hour, but because of the many choices, the replayvalue is imense. I play twenty times before it started to get repetiv. The story itself has decent gray and gray morality, with no faction beeing completly evil and every person having realistic and complex motivations. Even they can change depending on the playthrough. Recommend it immensly, price absolutly justified.

An intriguing post-apocalyptic fantasy setting that comes with its own inspired magic system. The dynamic between progress and tradition offers an interesting take that leans on a somehow biased, but nonetheless adequate conclusion. Characters, albeit quirky, are a bit schematic, predictable and naive, which is probably the greatest weakness of this work. The viable choices and options, on the other hand, are quite fun and varied.
