Hidden Nightmares

This game has every cliche trope that makes horror games bad. Dolls that move when you are not looking, giggling children, things running at you screaming loudly when you turn corner, items flying at you when you get close, exploding lights, jumpscares and spam jumpscares.

I DON'T THINK I'M AWAKE. WAKE UP. WAKE UP. This game provided a few chills. Assets were overused, music was a tad tedious at times, and the gameplay was extremely short with no real meaning or conclusion. But for the price, it's worth the 20min of quick chills and appreciation for some creativity from a small indie team.

Hidden Nightmares is a short psychological horror game that I found more unsettling because of how it plays with the idea of not knowing whether I am awake or still trapped inside a nightmare. I start in a hospital room and quickly realize that something is wrong with the world around me. I liked that the game does not try to overwhelm me with constant action. Instead, it relies on the feeling that something has changed and that I need to notice it before I can find my way back to reality. The gameplay is mostly built around exploration and observation. I move through the environment, look for clues and interact with objects while moving between the real world and the dream world. I enjoyed paying attention to familiar locations because the whole point is that something might not be the same the next time I see it. That makes even ordinary rooms feel suspicious, and I found myself checking details more carefully than I normally would in a walking simulator. The psychological side is probably what gives the game most of its identity. The character's sense of reality becomes increasingly unstable, and the game uses that uncertainty to create tension.
