I Am Emma

Really fecked it up on a possibly great game. The style of the game looks amazing and in fact it started off pretty strong. The jumpscares were actually pretty great. But then the glorification of suicide on the bed with the song pl;aying in the background as she bled out and the fixation of the gore porn and having the girl naked in the snow self mutilating made me turn away.

The story follows Emma, who lives in a small apartment with her daughter and suddenly begins experiencing paranormal events while seeing the ghost of a dead woman. Her daughter, however, can't see any of it. Unfortunately, it's impossible to follow what's actually happening because there are no subtitles, and characters often talk while you're too far away to hear them properly. Conversations also overlap, the voice acting lacks emotion, especially from the main character, and the dialogue is mixed at such a low volume that it's frequently drowned out by ambient sounds like thunder outside. The audio is one of the game's biggest problems because you can't adjust any of the sound settings and have to stick with the default mix. This results in painfully loud noises that are clearly meant to create jump scares, but instead become irritating and have you reaching for your speaker's volume knob while completely tuning out whatever is happening on screen. The gameplay is similar to most indie horror games. You explore the environment and interact with objects, some important and some not, to progress the story.
