Inline is a really simple puzzle game, but I think that simplicity is a big part of why it works. I am given different shapes and have to place them wherever I want on a grid, with the goal of completing full lines so they disappear. It reminds me of the basic idea behind block puzzles, but I have much more freedom over where I put each piece. There is no story or complicated progression getting in the way, so I can just start playing and focus on trying to keep the board under control. The actual puzzle system is more thoughtful than it looks at first. I have to think about the shape I have now, but I also need to leave enough useful space for whatever comes next. As I clear more lines, the shapes become larger and harder to fit, so eventually I have to start planning several moves ahead instead of just filling whatever space looks convenient. I also get a limited number of skips, which can be earned back by placing shapes and clearing lines. That gives me a useful way out when I get a piece that would otherwise cause a problem.
