About Ion Fury

✦ AI summary

Blast your way through hand-crafted neo-futuristic levels as bomb-defuser-turned-demon-slayer Shelly Harrison, armed with creative weapons like tri-barreled revolvers and grenade launchers loaded with alternate ammo types. This old-school Build Engine shooter brings back '90s action sensibilities with modern conveniences like headshots and physics while ditching regenerating health and linear paths for true run-and-gun carnage.

While Shelly "Bombshell" Harrison earned her codename defusing bombs for the Global Defense Force, when evil transhumanist mastermind Dr. Jadus Heskel unleashes the members of his cybernetic cult onto the streets of Neo D.C., she knows it's time to start causing explosions instead of preventing them. Her quest to slay Heskel leaves a trail of carnage throughout huge, multi-path levels filled with gigantic explosions, more secret areas than we can count, and inhuman foes behind every corner. There's no regenerating health here; stop taking cover and start running and gunning. Shelly's crusade to take down Heskel's army will see her leave destruction in her wake with a wide arsenal of weapons, complete with alternate fire modes and different ammo types. Her signature revolver, the tri-barreled Loverboy, brings enemies pain and players pleasure with both single shots and Old West-style hammer fanning action. Who needs a regular shotgun when you can load buckshot into your grenade launcher? Violent, over-the-top Bowling Bombs rip enemies apart with ease. Ion Fury laughs at the idea of mandatory checkpoints and straight paths through shooting galleries. But, just because this is a true old-school first-person shooter doesn't mean we've ignored all the good new stuff the last two decades have brought. Headshots? Hell yeah. More physics and interactivity? You betcha. Widescreen, controller support, and auto saves? 3D Realms and Voidpoint have taken the best of both worlds and cooked it all into a bloody stew.

  • Experience the original Build Engine on steroids, pumped up and ready to rock again after 20 years!
  • Duck, jump, climb, swim, and blast your way through 7 exciting zones packed with multiple levels of mayhem!

  • The classic '90s FPS action you love, meshed with modern inventions like locational damage and seamless level transitions.
  • ZERO PROCEDURAL GENERATION. All levels are hand made and full of multiple paths, cool effects, and complex set pieces!

Fun.

I didn't start with Doom (1993). I started with Doom (2016). That game made me ask a simple question: "Where did this feeling come from?" So I went backwards. I played Doom, Quake, Unreal, Duke Nukem 3D, Blood, Shadow Warrior, DUSK, Amid Evil... and finally arrived at Ion Fury. What I expected was another excellent boomer shooter. What I got was the culmination of an entire lineage. Every few hours I'd notice another piece of FPS history woven into it. The interconnected progression reminded me of Half-Life. The industrial sewer sections evoked Doom 3. The crisp, weighty combat carried the spirit of Blood, Duke Nukem 3D, and Shadow Warrior. Even small details, like the Quake-esque grenade launcher sound, felt like quiet nods rather than cheap nostalgia. Yet Ion Fury never feels like a collage. It has its own identity. The greatest surprise wasn't the shooting, it was the level design. I found myself enjoying sewer levels because they were full of clever environmental puzzles and believable geography. The game feels like one continuous journey. You don't finish "levels"; you escape a cyberpunk city, descend underground, ride a train, and eventually emerge into the countryside. The…

combat is super punchy and fun and one of the least recognizable GZDoom engine games I've played, my issue though is that the environments get really same-y like after the first couple areas everything quickly starts to look the same, not enough to say you shouldn't play it or anything but if you're someone that gets bored of games easily that specific aspect will hit you hard. Also I get they're going for a Duke Nukem vibe and all but hearing the same couple voice lines from the main character every time you do certain actions, get kills with certain weapons etc gets really grating after a while, if those voice lines triggered by regular gameplay (not one off lines triggered by entering certain areas) were to show up with at most half the frequency they do I probably wouldn't have this complaint but oh well

Fantastic boomer-shooter action. Gorgeous to look at, comfortable to control, incredibly fun to play.
