Juno's Darkest Hour is yet another of literally thousands of 2D retro platformers infesting Steam and lowering the average quality of all video games everywhere. This is a particularly poorly made platformer. I hope it's trying to emulate a Gameboy (if so, this is a terrible idea and a good explanation for why the game was such a dismal failure), because if not, it's just awfully made for no clear reason at all. Then again, we're deep in the shovelware section of the Steam store, so anything is possible. All you do in this platformer is do some precision platforming, collect stuff, don't let the baddies bump your heart containers to empty, etc etc. It's been done a thousand times or more, all better than this. From a technical perspective, the game doesn't meet basic minimum requirements that most PC gamers expect as standard. A choice was made to use obsolete, decades old retro pixel "art" as a substitute for contemporary PC graphics. It's unclear if this is due to lack of budget or talent, regardless, the overall visual quality of the game is extremely low as a result. This resulted in breaking my fifth metacarpal in my right hand—the hand I worked with, played games with, and used to carry my children to bed—the hand I desperately needed to ensure I could continue providing. Upon learning the severity of the self-inflicted damage, I became almost suicidal. Keep in mind that just a few months before this, I was the happiest man, with no history of depression or anxiety. I had never experienced anger outbursts, nor was I the type to break down and cry, but I was in a tough situation that truly prevented me from seeing the light on the other side. Juno's Darkest Hour, developed and published by Antoine Bilodeau, is a retro-inspired 2D action-adventure platformer that successfully captures the essence of classic side-scrolling games while adding its own unique flair. The game drops players into a bleak yet charming monochromatic world, where the stakes are high: the malevolent lizard wizard Glykon has stolen the essence of the world, threatening to reshape the land and consume its remaining free spirits. I have no idea where I bought this game, or if I even got it for free, but it's utterly terrible, boring, confusing and pure trash. Never make a video game again.
