The game was made in GameMaker, which partly explains its many flaws: It has monotonous graphics, painfully awkward character movements, no way to customize the controls, and a completely confusing loading system that can toss you to a random spot in the level when you use the load function in the menu. So how do you make a game harder? Just slap 'hard game' on the cover. But instead of thoughtful difficulty, players get annoying, VERY simple and predictable traps. On top of that, some of the “bubbles” — these useless local collectibles, which are as plentiful as coins in Super Mario Bros (probably where the creator drew inspiration) — can't be grabbed without triggering a trap and dying (it doesn’t even try to stretch the game out artificially, even a little). I might be wrong that the control issues plaguing this GameMaker: Studio copy and paste job have been resolved since Just Hero’s release: frankly, it doesn’t matter—it’s just another of countless retro-cute, no-to-low-effort one-button collectathons. If the platforming was clean and environmental hitboxes consistent, you’d be able to finish this in 10 minutes flat as there’s no graduated difficulty and almost no environmental hazards. As is, you’ll fight through the inconvenience of dying a few dozen times to collect the 100 maguffins for the training wheels cheevos and move on, having had no more or less fun than you had before installation. And if you’re keeping score, Sometimes You’s games can almost all be completed in less the two-hour refund window; very few of these “games” show demonstrably more effort than JH:”HG”.
