When I saw a game called Kayaking on Steam for $4.99, I thought, “Hey, this could be a relaxing little paddle down a virtual river.” Nope. Big mistake. This game is less about soaking in the scenery and more about questioning your life choices while you spin in circles for five minutes straight. The controls are the first enemy you’ll face. They are brutally difficult to master, and in the beginning, I rage quit more times than I care to admit. I’m pretty sure my kayak spent more time upside-down than actually moving forward. But here’s the catch—once I stuck with it, I started to actually improve. And that tiny sense of progress? Weirdly rewarding. It’s like the game is training you through pain, kind of like boot camp, but with more drowning. You can use a controller, and while it’s a bit easier, don’t think you’re getting off the hook. The developers clearly enjoy watching us suffer, because they throw in traps like collapsing bridges and other obstacles designed purely to ruin your day.
