"Kingless Dungeon" is a student project from University of Madrid. One of the first things students should be taught in game development is that 3D graphics became mainstream in the mid 1990's with dedicated 3D cards like the Voodoo3 and the ATI Rage. But the students were deliberately mistaught that's it's okay to release obsolete 2D games in the 3D era of gaming... certainly any professional developer seeing a prospective new hire who doesn't even know about 3D gaming probably isn't going to give them a job. Needless to say if an educational institution taught me incorrectly on purpose, I'd ask for my money back. So this is a simple 30 minute long 2D hack and slash platformer. You play as the Shadow Prince, a warrior with amnesia. The story follows the Prince's quest to reclaim his memories while navigating a dungeon filled with traps and undead enemies. There's no save feature (come on, teach students how to make those, it's important), which is a frustrating shortcoming. We also have to question what value there is for gamers on Steam when institutions flood the store with low quality 2D video game homework assignments... sure, it might make the students feel good about…

Kingless Dungeon is a really charming little action platformer that I enjoyed mostly because of its unusual story. I play as the Shadow Prince, who loses his memory after an accident and mistakenly believes he is the hero who defeated the dungeon's evil ruler. The funny part is that he is actually the villain, so I end up fighting my own undead servants while completely misunderstanding what is happening. I liked that setup immediately because it gives the adventure a playful twist. The combat is built around fast hack and slash action, with plenty of enemies waiting throughout the dungeon. I can discover new skills as I explore, which gives the combat a little more variety as I progress. I enjoyed moving through the rooms and figuring out when to attack, jump or avoid hazards. The controls are straightforward, but the combination of platforming and combat keeps the movement feeling active. Exploration is another part I liked. The dungeon contains traps, secrets and different paths, so I am encouraged to look around instead of simply rushing toward the exit.
