About Linda & Joan Prologue: “Four Months Earlier”

Shortlisted for the New Media Writing Prize 2021

Linda & Joan is a narrative game about a British family. You play as Russell, Linda, and Joan — son, mother, and grandmother — switching between them to help the family cope with a series of traumatic events. Based on a true story.

Prologue: “Four Months Earlier” is part one of the story. Part two, the main Linda & Joan game, is in development.

Linda is visiting Russell in Los Angeles, where he now lives. We join them halfway up a hiking trail. You must walk them to the top. Linda is using a stick and is unable to move as quickly as Russell. Keep them within earshot and they’ll chat about Linda’s visit and the past, while trying to find the right time to bring up what’s weighing on their minds.

There are multiple endings based on the choices you make — one of which involves Joan, who is at home in Hereford, UK. Play in Normal Mode (walk Russell, Linda follows) then try Challenging Mode (walk both Russell and Linda).

“Four Months Earlier” is a free, standalone experience. It will take 15 to 20 minutes to complete.

Featuring original music by Jeremy Warmsley.

"Linda & Joan Prologue: “Four Months Earlier”" is not a game. It's an advertisement for a product called "Linda & Joan". Linda & Joan is a pretentious more art/book-than-game visual novel/ebook that doensn't even exist because the developer gave up after seeing zero interest in the project. Which isn't surprising. It's about a English family that hangs around an asset flip of the Griffith Observatory in Los Angeles, for some reason. Film buffs will remember the asset because it's where Arnie kills Bill Paxton in 1984's classic "Terminator", from James Cameron. At least I think the developer knows that was the asset he was flipping. But this isn't completely relevant because this is not Linda & Joan, it's just an advertisment for it, so it's not correct to try to review that completely distinct product. We must instead review this for what it is... an advertisement. If you enjoy advertisements, you can consume them for free on the web or on Youtube without needing to add them to your game library, download them, and then launch the advertising. It's impossible in a general sense to recommend people should do that over playing real, full games on Steam, and that applies he…

I discovered this in my Wishlist from ages ago, and decided to give it a go. It's more of a narrative art project than a game as such. It's about a time when its creator's mother and grandmother both died, but I didn't find the prologue as bleak as that makes it sound. I found the dialogue quite relatable, although happily my parents are still alive. The full game looks interesting, but knowing where it's headed may limit my interest in spending money on it. Worth trying though.
