Magnifico

Magnifico is an unusual turn based strategy game with an equally unusual premise. Leonardo Da Vinci's inventions have been built, and you must use them to conquer Renaissance Europe... or actually any other number of maps. It's just a game of territories and players, all set up exactly the same. And that's where we can start to see the problems here. There's no a lot of soul in this game once you get past the "Oh, Leonardo invented tanks and flying machines" novelty. There's also not a lot of depth... this plays more like Risk meets Defender of the Crown (remember that from the Commodore 64?), maybe a little more depth, but not much. Thing is, I know fans of turn based strategy games, because I am one. We don't play these games looking for a casual, almost mobile game level of depth, we're looking for games like Hearts of Iron or Crusader Kings. The empire management here is simplistic, there's only a couple of unit types (thanks Leonardo, you should have been more inventive, now look at the result). Game seems to be direct adaptation of real table top game, so being negative about kind of counter-intuitive. Game is essentially Risk with extra spice in form of upgrades for units. Problem is game is for single evening. There is no multi, game settings like point limit or players are limited and we have only 4 maps to choose from. It’s basically nothing. For TT game ok because game takes longer and is with friends. But its PC game, its fast and even on the largest settings can be done in 15-30min, seeing everything after 2-3 games. It would need more cards, maps and options that is simply don’t have. Control is also little janky, where you don’t exactly know what action you still can do, while dealing with this “functional” window all the time. It’s not bad per se. Art and idea is lovely but just don’t work as single player video game.

This game is trash. attack a position with 9 infantry with 8 infantry 3 tanks and one plane and you lose. your dice roles you lose 2 troops. makes no sense, you win important game points by gambling on in between round cards that never come in to play. the menus are difficult. the game just plane sucks. not even worth the 99 cents i paid for it.
