About Man of Nollyn

The lone game developer thought, sipping his cold coffee: "What if I made a classic noir detective game, but with some twists? A little jazz in the background. A few bad jokes. Maybe throw in some characters with actual feelings, just for fun. Have them go through some real life shit. How about that?”And so, Man of Nollyn was born. Not all detectives wear fedoras and trench coats. Man of Nollyn is the story of young adults who grew up too fast, solving brutal crimes, and making mistakes along the way. You'll be playing as Vin Virosa, a street-borne private eye with a foul mouth and a dark past. Your clients are Katherine and Chloe, two ambitious police officers looking to prove themselves.

Unique investigation mechanisms: Bribery & Intimidation

Stuck on something? Need a hint? In Man of Nollyn, you don't get that by asking nicely. Bribe suspects with money, or even shove a gun in their face to discover the truth. Not the noblest act, but hey. What’s the worst that could happen?

Features

  • A side-scrolling noir-style detective game with sharp wit and biting satire
  • Bribe suspects or intimidate them into spilling their secrets
  • Short answer questions. A real detective wouldn’t just guess, right?
  • Rich jazz soundtrack. Really makes you feel like an actual genius.

I genuinely enjoyed the way this game built its story. Something that might seem meaningless at first coming back leading to a bigger conclusion later on or something seemingly big leading to an entirely wrong conclusion. With roughly 6 hours of playtime it was perfect to connect the dots while not forgetting where you started the story. As someone who enjoys taking notes while playing games like Man of Nollyn it was interesting to see when I picked up on important facts or missed them entirely in my notes.

This isn’t the hardboiled noir story game you might expect. It’s about fairly normal people: having a crush, failing at their career, and wanting to apologize after hurting someone. The artwork is okay at best, and a lot of the characters tend to look alike. The puzzle-solving doesn’t rely on hard logic all the time, but there’s still this thrill when you land on the right answer. Also, bribing and intimidating people makes things easier. The story isn’t flashy or exceptional, but it feels relatable and human. If you’re looking for sharp twists or high-stakes drama, this probably won’t stick with you.

Man of Nollyn is a detective adventure game. We're talking to suspects, examining clues and collecting notes, and then we need to answer 3 or 4 questions. The answers have to be typed in. The game is rather uneven. Sometimes the deductions are reasonable, and sometimes it turns out a deduction was built on an arbitrary assumption. There's some nice storytelling, and then the next moment the game introduces some random implausible twist. The difficulty is generally low, since we're told how many answers we got right, and then the last case does not provide that hint, significantly raising the difficulty.
