About Manic Archers
ULTIMATE LOCAL MULTIPLAYER RETROGAMING ARCADE
Manic Archers is a game that I personally would have liked to play back then, but it was not possible in the 16bit era because of technical limitations. A game that overflows with gems inspired by the arcade 2D high-times - 1000s of sprites and interlocking effects cumulating into a sensory overload of 16bit hype - while keeping that absolute, direct and perfectly controllable arcade grip. It took 2 years to perfect this passion project as a solo-developer.
Update Note: all controller problems have been fixed.
Note: Manic Archers was in Early Access from March 2021 till its official release on March 20th, 2023 - it was just classified wrong and Steam did not allow to change back to Early Access status.

GAMEPLAY FIRST
MANIC ARCHERS is an atmospheric and extremely addictive local and online multiplayer arcade game in pixelart-style.
It features simplistic and on-the-point gameplay with amazing game mechanics and lovely pixelart-details.
It is playable with up to 4 players simultaneously on one single screen in several well known multiplayer variants.
THE MOST SIMPLE GAME OF ALL TIME
One screen and 3 buttons is all you need to know - jump, shoot and dash/block. The depth of good gameplay is found in simplicity accompanied by great mechanics.

THINK ZELDA AND DEATHMATCH
With the intention to make a multiplayer match top-down game, MANIC ARCHERS owes to and actually should remind of the heritage of all top-down games like the Zelda and Final Fantasy series. Imagine the same love for details put into a competitive multiplayer arcade game for 4 players simultaneously.
APPROVED MULTIPLAYER FUN
In versus-mode players each control an archer, shooting the opposing archers until only one archer is left - besides Free-For-All versus, Manic Archers is featuring several other well known multiplayer modes.
During the game a lot of combinable and game changing powerups and special arrows appear on the playing field, enabling players to turn the game around in an instant.
AI TO KEEP YOU GAMING
In case you need one more player to start a 2on2 teamplay match or if you are alone and want to train, Manic Archers got AI opponents to fill up the slots.
RETRO CAUSE WE DO NOT NEED 3D FOR THAT
The game takes place on a single screen with classic arcade wrap-around scrolling. The players make use of the top-down environment strategically such as water, higher grounds, obstacles and interactive map parts such as switches, explosives, burnable trees and more.
Key Features
Up to 4 players local and online
Play arcade style locally AND online with up to 4 Players (via Remote Play Together).
Versus
Simple Free-For-All match, fast paced, deep gameplay mechanics (also available for Teamplay).
King of the hill
Keep control of the center of the map to gain points and secure the round (also available for Teamplay).
Catch the fool with the chicken
All players match against the one who got the chicken - the one who keeps the chicken longest wins the round.
Conquer
Dominate parts of the map to gain points, the one who dominated most flags the longest wins.
Survival Coop
How long can you and your friends survive against hordes of enemies? Manic Archers features a small coop-campaign that is also playable alone. Though DO NOT buy Manic Archers just for the coop-campaign - Manic Archers is primarily meant as a versus game.
Deep gameplay mechanics
The gameplay is set up for competitive and fun matches through deep but easy to learn game mechanics.
AI Opponents
Fill up the remaining slots with AI opponents with adjustable skill or create matches alone to train.
Interactive and individual maps
Interactive maps allow strategic advances which are easy to understand and use. The interactive elements available vary in each map
SPECIAL MOVES
Though you will probably find out these yourself, as they're pretty simple...
- SUPER DASH - Dash while on the way down of a jump, shortly before you hit the ground
- STOMP JUMP - Hit the JUMP button again while in mid air
- SHIELD - Hold down the dash button to shield yourself against attacks from the direction you are facing
Known Bugs and limitations
- The game occasionally crashes when using X-Box Controllers. This seems to be an issue with X-Control type controllers and the Unity engine in general and has nothing to do with the game itself.

I'm not sure how to best enjoy this game. Went looking for a forum, Discord, even a Reddit group, and couldn't find anywhere to chat to others about this game. So I decided to shout into the void about this game, in the form of a review. For context: This style of game is not new to me. I'm a big fan of "party" style local multiplayer games, and I have a lot of fun introducing new friends to Duck Game, Towerfall Ascension, etc. etc. Just played this over xmas with some family and ... I think we had fun? It was certainly chaotic. Much of the first rounds was just trying to work out what the heck just happened and who "won" and why. Right off the bat - the screen is chock full of stuff as soon as people start attacking. It can be very hard to see who's shooting at who and what to dodge. And then within seconds, the powerups "happen" and you have no chance of making sense of anything. The entire screen fills with flashing effects like laser blasts, particles, lightning strikes, and before you know it, 1 or more people are dead and the round is over. We played a decent number of rounds (I would say somewhere between 10 and 20?) trying to work out the game and give it it's best sh…4 found this helpful
One of the best party games I've played! Unique, the artstyle is pure nostalgia, and the gameplay is just hilarious/random. This is a great party game, and love it's Steam Co-Op compatible.1 found this helpful
I love games that can be played together with friends and this game fits perfectly into this category. Just grab a beer, stretch you bow and enjoy all the gimmics and weapon systems this game has to offer :D If you like games like worms and tank you will most likely also enjoy this one! :)1 found this helpful
Well, first: you really do need a controller in order to play, it won't work with mouse and keyboard. But even if it did, you'd still want a controller, I'd say. So now I probably need to buy a better controller for this... The game has an awesome retro vibe, especially the music. The title doesn't disappoint: the gameplay is frantic. You're an archer, jumping around, shooting enemies, dodging projectiles, potentially hitting yourself while trying to get rid of the waves of enemies spawning. Fortunately your ammunition is also constantly spawning in random locations, because you need to keep supplied. And what an arsenal you can collect. It reminds me of the loadout of worms or xenon 2: absolutely ridiculously overpowered. Sometimes ravines form across the field and you better get to a safe spot quickly. Quite a challenge to master, especially because once you leave the screen to any side, you return on the opposing one, like in some old arcade games. You definitely need to be on your toes to catch a break. Once you get a hang of it (or even before that, if you enjoy being incredibly outmatched), you can play with your friends on the same machine or remote, PVP or Co-op; this is wh…1 found this helpful
Manic Archers is an absolutely frenetic multiplayer twinstick brawler. Good range of maps and play modes for replayability. It looks and sounds great and is super intense if a little too fast for me. Manic Archers is an awesome brawler! It gives me Street Fighter cross Little Fighter vibes and everything about it is exciting. My only complaint is that's it's a *touch* too fast for me. Still in EA though, so: Ancient Most High Games, speed control when? Want to know more?
