About Markov Alg

Markov Alg (short for "Markov Algorithm") is a retro-style puzzle game where you navigate game fields filled with code and instructions, and transform strings of symbols to finally get to your goal.

As the game begins, you play each level as an "X" symbol, with the goal of reaching the "+" symbol... Then the game evolves, and gets even harder.
  • 64 levels of game play
  • Apply instructions to the instructions themselves
  • Copy and delete any symbol on field (even "X"!)
  • Re-write the rules, and change the game!

Markov Alg is a good, short puzzle game (let's say 2-3h) with an interesting Matrix-style hacker aesthetic. The game mechanic is a mix of sokoban puzzle game and executing extremely simple predefined programming instructions of the form "'initial_string' becomes 'final_string'". Later on you can also adjust those strings, or manipulate where you execute these instructions, or selectively break them so they aren't executed. Other reviews mention a similarity to Baba is You, and I guess I can see the resemblance, but this is a tiny game, not a puzzle epic like Baba. Level progression is reasonable: you can skip individual hard levels, and have access to the ~3 most recent unsolved levels. The first ~40 of the 63 levels are mostly very easy, but the game eventually picks up the challenge. My one complaint is that the game caused a constant minor noise in my previous PC monitor, and a bit of GPU coil whine in my GPU, so I figure there must be some problem with the scanlines in the game's art style or something. That said, some of these issues disappeared when I forced VSync on in my GPU driver settings. Oh, and there are zero game settings except for a fullscreen mode. [quote]For mo…

I really liked this - it's the closest game to Baba is You that I'm aware of and I think it's a shame it's so obscure. For whatever reason I didn't get stuck in it as much as I got stuck in Baba. I think Baba has a few too many implicit mechanics I can't keep in my mind all at once; Markov felt more readable as well oddly enough. I got stuck on 8 for a while but eventually had the A-HA moment which is essential to progress imo. I eventually "finished" it as in I solved the last level (I've skipped 58 and 61). I would definitely enjoy another 64 levels if the developer ever decides to continue with this.

Had to post a review as it has so few - which is a crime. A really great little puzzle game. Baba is you meets Patrick's parabox.

Clever logic puzzle game akin to Baba is You and Rogue Bit. You use logic which overlaps with coding has less programming-like activities compare to the devs other programming games.
