"Monstro: Battle Tactics" is extremely misleading in the sales blurb. This is not an RPG at all. It's more like a grid puzzle game with an RPG skin slathered on it, because you know, gamers love thinking they're getting an RPG and they get Sokoban from Temu instead. Ugh. Don't be mislead. This features really godawful pixelcrap "art" instead of real graphics. It's hard to say if this was because the developer didn't have the skill to do the job of creating 3D visuals, or couldn't afford to hire someone who does, but it also doesn't matter. What matters is that this looks much worse than most other games because of that decision, and that's a major deterrent to gamers. Games like Terraria and Stardew Valley succeeded [i]despite[/i] the bad graphics, not because of them. It's free... now, but it wasn't before. The developer, in a fit of delusion was charging $6 USD for this. No pixelcrap is worth $6 Price barriers, especially on low quality products, can be a direct cause of failure. Monstro: Battle Tactics is a pretty clever little strategy game that takes the usual tactical RPG idea and removes most of the RPG parts. I am not building a character, grinding levels or dealing with random critical hits. Instead, every battle is basically a puzzle where I have to work out exactly what the enemy is going to do and then use that information to win. The whole thing is set on floating islands where humans and monsters are forced to fight for the entertainment of the Skygods, which gives the game a silly story to go along with a surprisingly serious tactical system. The deterministic combat is easily the best thing about it for me. Enemy actions follow predictable rules, so when I lose, I can usually work backwards and figure out what mistake I made instead of blaming a bad roll. That makes each level feel more like solving a chess puzzle than playing a normal tactical RPG. I can move my units, attack, use ranged attacks and take advantage of the enemy behaviour to create situations where I already know what is going to happen several moves ahead. I really like that because it makes a successful turn feel earned. The undo system is another feature I appreciate a lot…
