I am a bit hesitant in writing this review. I didn't finish the game, which some would argue affects my judgement. Some of the problems I see in Pixel Heroes are also arguably part of the roguelike genre as a whole, meaning it's difficult to parse what is an issue and what is a feature. As a turn-based roguelike, Pixel Heroes is fine. It has some cute (and sometimes vaguely horrifying) surprises and references, the gameplay follows a pretty predictable but engaging rock-paper-scissors model and it obviously doesn't lack challenge. That's why I ended up siding with the blue and not the red on this one, because I did have some fun with the game. I don't want to dismiss that. However. What the game suffers from is twofold: 1) a lack of transparancy and 2) status effects that are too powerful in relation to the protection available against them. For example, a status effect like poison can do an irrelevant amount of damage in one encounter, while on another run it can take away chunks of your health bar with no real way to discern what the difference between the two is. Pixel Heroes: Byte & Magic is a charming roguelike dungeon crawler that won me over with its genuinely funny random events and absurd humor — there's nothing quite like encountering a Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas reference on the way to a goblin dungeon. The 30 unlockable hero classes and procedurally generated loot keep runs feeling fresh, and when you nail your party composition and gear setup just right, crushing a dungeon is immensely satisfying. That said, the game's biggest frustration is how artificial the difficulty can feel — you can spend 45 minutes carefully managing inventory and building a solid party only to get insta-wiped by a random encounter or get locked in an unwinnable stalemate with an immune enemy and no way to retreat. The inability to exit a dungeon mid-run is a genuine design flaw that turns what should be a fun roguelike into a punishing slog, especially when your healer dies on room 6 of 8. Still, if you go in with low expectations and a tolerance for RNG cruelty, there's a genuinely fun little game buried here — just grab it on sale.3 found this helpful

I enjoyed this despite its flaws. Look at some guides to prepare for the next dungeon and you will do a much better job at surviving.
A fun little rogue game that does not take itself seriously whatsoever and neither should you. Play for fun and to see how far you can get and the ridiculous items you can equip. I myself took the arm of a necromancer and used it to smack a golem. That is just how this games rolls.
If only the regular/combat animations could be sped up... and fights and wandering more diverse and interesting. (7-/10. Barely recommended.)
