Quell 4D

No one has reviewed this in ages so I'll be reviewing it with an emphasis on how it has aged. First of all it's aged okay. The main issue is the price. A game with a simple sprite style like this really needs to be $10 or less to be competitive with newer games. This game came out when, believe it or not, artificial locomotion was a dirty word, and pretty much the only thing on offer were short experiences. So being a game with a decent motion sickness solution that still allowed movement it did well. They do allow many forms of movement which is nice; most people will just chose artificial loco at this point - the game is 20X harder with teleport since strafing is your only way to dodge attacks And the level design is good - pretty much like old school doom. The soundtrack is also pretty great. But it's sort basic and boring. It's just old school doom VR with a different art style. No physics or interaction or neat systems at this point. On the other hand, release this for the Quest!! It would go over very well on that system. Amazing VR game similar to the classic Doom game. Super fast paced gameplay that will challenge you greatly. It's also getting a major update adding Co-Op soon. Highly recommended.

Really good, but very derivative shooter that feels very much like a VR game of the original Dooms / Wolfensteins.

i get this game is going for doom/wolfenstien aesthetics but the EXTREMELY repetitive-feeling rooms and the heavy use of billboards just looks pretty ugly to me. the visuals look nifty in the trailer, but not so much when you get depth perception involved. feels unpolished, lacking in variety, and *slow*. moving in this game feels like steering a blimp (riding on mucus helps, but doesnt save much). this game mightve been great if it had another year or two in the oven, but it didnt, so it's not.

An off-the-walls campaign with a timeless artstyle, Quell 4D deserves some credit for being one of the scant few Vive-era games that still works almost perfectly on modern headsets. It won't blow your mind - there's only two hours of levels here and your walk is more of a relaxed crawl - but it's charming enough to be a positive experience.

I beat the game i 2-3 hours it looks like. Simple art style and very reminiscent of shooters from 1990's. One of the first games I played and still got a little motion sick but not terrible. I have a feeling there are more Easter eggs / secrets to this game but don't have a strong urge to replay. Fun game.
