Radiant Arc

This is an excellent, long, involving game with a great story. Interesting combat and a number of twists and turns in the plot. There is a guide written by the great firefly 130984 (much grateful for the guide - as this is a BIG game) and that guide has a map which helps mightily in such a big game world. I only had really one quibble - the inventory is huge and there is not way to organise how it presents in the inventory menu - which means that I found I spent a fair amount of time looking for, say, all the possible flails, or swords with certain characteristics, or rings that could prevent stun. While this IS an rpgmaker game it is one of the best I have played. It is worth paying full price if you are looking for semi-old school rpgs.

[h1]Story[/h1] The story is functionally the classic hero vs demon lord plot, but with a lot of quirky characters with humorous interactions. However, the large cast of playable characters resulted in some of the lategame characters not being as developed as much as the earlier cast. Additionally, Tamotsu's romance subplot feels rushed, since he doesn't get a whole lot of time to interact with the water and fire spirits. While there are a lot of optional dungeons, most of them don't really feature much world building and are instead references to other works with little plot dialogue, which is a shame because some of those could have been used to develop some of the overlooked lategame characters. [h1]Gameplay[/h1] The game uses ATB, which means faster characters benefit more. However, all actions have an amount of ATB delay before they activate, which is a double-edged sword. On one hand, this allows the possibility of using specific skills to interrupt powerful attacks with long delay. Very good rpg that has a big world to explore with multiple characters.

Here's a quick summary of my experience: I've been in the mood for a classic jrpg since i've played the Pixel Remasters before this, and Radiant Arc by far fulfills that need of a classic yet modern jrpg. It has all the classic systems of the old rpgs while not having any of the bad quirks, clumsiness and slowness of the old rpgs. The story is rather impressive, and rather solid, but of course the main point is the game play and man does it deliver. Each of the playable party members are useful, powerful and because they all gain exp regardless if they're in battle, none of them ever lag behind and as such i saw myself often switching the members frequently to match the enemy composition. The balance of game favors the player more so the game is generally an easier time than other jrpglikes. regardless, if you want a classic and casual jrpg with a fun cast of characters, this game is pretty good if you're fine with rpgmaker games :D
