About Recursed

Recursed is a 2D puzzle-platform game where the structure of the world can be twisted. Stack up boxes and use keys to unlock doors to get the crystal at the end of each level. Jump into chests to enter other rooms, or pick up the chests and move the rooms around. Duplicate, destroy or alter the structure of the level to solve the puzzles.

There's no way to die, no enemies to fight and no holes to fall in or spikes to hit. The only tool you need is logic.

I gave this game a try due to its overwhelming positive reviews. However, after reaching the bottom row of levels in the Ruins, and trying a couple of the later levels, I'm not very impressed, and will drop the game here. I have a couple major complaints. One is that the player needs to be able to visualize which rooms are which, despite all of them looking pretty much the same until you enter them. The other is much more of a subjective feeling that all the mechanics introduced feel forcibly gimmicky. Sometimes I asked myself "Why does <mechanic> work in this way?" and to me the answer very often feels like "because the dev wanted to design a level that only works if the mechanic is designed that way." The flip-side of this line of thinking is that the mechanics are all very precise, which could be a plus for some. I feel of two ways with the level design. A lot of the levels begin with simply exploring, because you can't see all the rooms upon entering the level. You have to jump into each chest to see what's inside. This is used as a plus to lay out the initial thought process the designer wants a player to go through in order to solve the puzzle. Then the player tries the obv…

Fun, but tricky, puzzle game. Can hurt your head if you are not a programmer (and even if you are) but satisfying to complete.

Recursed is an exceptionally creative puzzle-platformer developed by Portponky and published by Shambles Software. At first glance it appears to be a simple adventure centered on collecting keys and reaching exits, but it quickly reveals itself as a brilliantly designed logic game built around one of the most original mechanics in the genre. Instead of simply traversing rooms, players manipulate entire rooms as physical objects. Treasure chests contain fully explorable spaces, and those spaces can be carried, nested, relocated, and used to alter the structure of the world itself. This unusual concept forms the foundation of an experience that consistently surprises players with increasingly clever and mind-bending puzzles. The gameplay revolves entirely around understanding the rules of this recursive world. Every puzzle requires careful observation and logical reasoning rather than quick reflexes or combat skills. Opening a chest may reveal another room, while carrying that chest effectively transports an entire environment wherever it is needed. As players progress, additional mechanics expand these possibilities, introducing new ways to interact with rooms and objects while rem…

An extremely challenging and excellent recursive game. It’s essentially like manipulating static or global variables within a recursive function, if we use programming language as an analogy. I suggest drawing it out on paper to keep track of the depth you’re at. Personally, I get too lazy and overwhelmed to finish once it becomes unmanageable for my monkey brain. Very interesting concept . A challenging and engaging game where you get to understand about the abstract concept of recursion.
