About Residual

Residual... a new breed of survival platformer from OrangePixel.

In a forgotten galaxy full of strange planets, a lone explorer crash-lands on one with an ancient alien secret. Venture forth from the shipwreck across a harsh, unpredictable, procedurally generated world. Harvest food and make campfires to stay alive. Craft science-fiction survival tools like teleporters and mining devices. Unearth alien technology capable of repairing the ship. Hunger, cosmic storms, hostile plant life, and the mysterious ooze are among the many obstacles you'll face.

You won't be alone! PDB (a snarky floating Personal Disaster Bot) will follow and assist you along the way. Sometimes. PDB also helps you discover the hidden lore, revealing the history of the planet as you explore deeper and deeper, assuming you can survive!

OrangePixel’s uniquely designed Nature Engine generates thousands of planets from a vast set of environment-based rules, then drops explorers on a world brimming with potential. If a planet orbits close to the sun, intense heat, high winds, and sparse vegetation will pose a set of challenges wildly different from other worlds. Further from the sun, long nights make stamina easier to maintain, but reduced solar power turns every suit function—like scanning the planet—into a critical decision.

Residual welcomes players to a non-violent survival experience with limitless possibilities and no traditional combat. Jump and descend through colorful, highly detailed pixel art evoking classic 2D platformers. Solve light puzzles to reveal secrets of a long-lost civilization. Select a male, female, or non-binary protagonist, customize survival parameters like how fast time advances, and race to repair the ship, dig up ancient secrets, or collect data entries on hundreds of undiscovered objects.

Pointlessly infuriating. Residual tried to be a procedurally generated crafting platformer with two simple "jump" and "action" buttons but whether you are using a keyboard, controller, or other input, navigating this game and its interface is too frustrating to play.

Pretty relaxing game. No combat. Explore, discover and craft, get eaten by a plant... Cute pixel graphics. Not as orange as I expected. Bit of a learning curve, but doesn't take long to get the hang of it. It's not for everyone, but if you like pixel graphics and crafting/exploration, this should scratch that itch. Quite an ambitious project for a 1 man dev team. Nice job. I enjoy it. Now I'm off to step in some goo and get chewed on and spat out by god knows what next.

A great concept but poorly executed. Spent sometimes close to an hour just trying to figure out what items go with which puzzles. The procedural generation is terrible resulting in lots of areas that wind around and dead end, resulting in tons of backtracking. The platforming mechanics are absolutely infuriating, very unsatisfying jumps and vine swinging.

This was a nice change of pace for me as someone who usually plays FPS games. It took about 10 hours of off and on game play to repair the ship. Difficulty was reasonable. I neither got stuck nor could I mindlessly run through it. Some reviews are critical of the game's mechanics. Personally, I never had an issue with the controls. I would recommend if you're into exploration and looking for something different.

Firstly, I hope this review help the people to buy this game. I am still on the way of exploring the game, but I have to show some of the game's aspects. First of all, the game has several bugs that still clinging onto it. For example, whenever I try to cook cooked mushroom, the game instantly closes. Thanks for the instant exit from the game! Another example is, there are sometimes impassable ways. That is probably because of uncalculated map creating. Thirdly, some of the items are literally frust. If the item I made has no ultility, from what reason should I inspire to make it? [lashing]. I may not find how to use it, but there are no directions except our bot, Pedey B. Overall, this game seems like there are several things unfinished intentionally. I hope they became finished things with the work of the developer. Apart from enourmous bugs, the musics, the pixel art, the companion, [the small interactions with our companion], the variety in creatures [so far], and the time decor are nice to have. I hope we would have a item that makes us to interact with the creatures since it is annoying to stand still while they damage you and you are like crossing your arms and waiting. O…

How can EVERYTHING that Orangepixel made is the worst gaming experience that can race with Ubermosh games... Y'now what, I'm just gonna copy paste this comment, for any game that I have from this developer...
