About RIN: The Last Child
Play as RIN, the last child of the Creator, on a journey to restore order in a mystical world. Collect aspects and runes, craft spells, and confront powerful bosses - your transformed siblings. The fate of the world rests in your hands.
The story of RIN, her siblings, and their Creator, the Teller of Tales, was inspired by the well-known ancient myth about Cronus and his conflict with his children. It also touches upon the overall passing of gods who must be replaced by new gods. The creation myths seemed to match perfectly Metroidvania's dark fairy tale - no trace of man, but the importance of magic. An important motif and another layer of the script is the conflict between being obedient to authority - the father (the Creator) or freedom - the free will and responsibility for oneself and one's decisions. The story offers different possible endings based on your choices.

There are 18 elemental spells from three categories: attack (10), defense (5), and utility (3).The spells are created of Aspects of Magic (5) and Spell Patterns. Then, they can be enchanted with a currency by Lesser Runes (adding more damage) or upgraded by an upgrade scheme and Great Runes (changing the effect). The quick slot allows assigning 3 spells at a time but gives an option to quickly swap to another spell set. Mathematically, considering the combination of Lesser Runes, Great Runes, and Upgrades, there are as many as 7776 spells variants. As you progress, the spells can be disassembled in order to use the aspects components for another assembly.

On your exploration journey, you will fight many small creatures formed from their locations such as Slimes, Mosquitoes, but also bigger creepy beasts like Rats or Spitting Plants. The main fights though, will not only require a neat set of spells and skills but most importantly the decisions to take based on your will. As RIN, the sixth child of the Creator, you will confront five bosses - your unknown siblings. The fate of the world rests in your hands. Can you save everyone?

Rin the last child is a rough gem, but a gem nonetheless and one that, despite its flaws, i still really enjoyed. Before going into this i knew the game had a mixed rating, i did not know why but i had already picked it up since i liked the artstyle. As with any game that has a difficulty option and mixed reviews i opted for easy. Since most often the reason for the low ratings has to do with combat. With Rin it sorta had to do with that but not really? The combat in rin is basic, very basic which is mostly due to the very little enemy variety. I think accross the whole game there's probably only a dozen or so different enemies in terms of attacks. They have reskins for each biome but this makes the combat quite repetitive. Luckily there's a large assortment of spells to break this monotony, 18 to be exact. And while some of these function relatively similar most of the are completely unique. Now i'm not gonna pretend they're perfectly balanced since the base attack can get you through the whole game but the option is there and appreciated. Reason why you don't have to engage with this system, atleast on easy difficulty, is that most enemies are generally pretty weak. I heard one…2 found this helpful
RIN: The Last Child, developed by Space Fox Games and published by Salient Games, is a Metroidvania that clearly aims to stand out by building its identity around magic, mythology, and player-driven customization. You step into the role of Rin, a demigoddess navigating a fractured world shaped by the remnants of creation itself, where her journey is not just about survival but about reclaiming lost power and confronting the legacy of a broken divine order. The premise carries a sense of weight from the beginning, presenting a world that feels both mystical and melancholic, with themes of rebellion, identity, and consequence woven into its foundation. What distinguishes the game most is its approach to abilities through a modular spellcrafting system. Rather than unlocking fixed powers in a traditional progression, players are encouraged to experiment by combining runes and magical aspects to create spells tailored to their playstyle. This system introduces a level of flexibility that is uncommon in the genre, allowing for a wide range of approaches to both combat and traversal. Some builds favor aggressive, high-damage outputs, while others lean toward utility or defensive strateg…1 found this helpful
great game with an amazing art style . it has potenial beut needs massive qualtiy of life improvments. an example would be there was a platforming section that required three different abilities to get through but all the abilities are tied to the same button so the would randomly choose which one to use. the map needs work as it zooms painfully slow, reveals itself in massive chunks making it really difficult to remember what parts of those revealed chunks you have explored making 100 percenting the collectibles nearly impossible either it needs a collectible map or a different method for it to reveal itself. the map was also missing markers so sometimes the saves or portals would not apear on the map. the warp menu needs to be reoganized so that warps in the same area are right next to each other on the list.
Good story, boring combat and frustrating exploration mechanics.
