River City Super Sports Challenge ~All Stars Special~, developed by Arc System Works and published by H2 Interactive Co., Ltd., is a deliberately chaotic blend of sports competition and side-scrolling brawler action that fully embraces the eccentric spirit of the long-running Kunio-kun series. Rather than treating sports as structured contests governed by rules and precision, the game turns every event into a playground for disruption, where punching opponents, throwing objects, and sabotaging rivals are just as important as actually completing the objective. It’s a design that feels intentionally unruly, prioritizing unpredictability and humor over balance or realism. The game is built around a set of unconventional sporting events, including obstacle races, cross-country runs, climbing challenges, and all-out brawls. While each event has its own basic objective, the way you achieve victory is far from straightforward. Success often comes from exploiting the game’s combat mechanics—knocking opponents down, using environmental hazards to your advantage, or simply slowing everyone else down long enough to secure a win. This creates a unique dynamic where traditional racing or athle…1 found this helpful
River City Super Sports Challenge ~All Stars Special~ is a chaotic, retro-style sports brawler that revives Kunio-kun's legacy. This game really shines as a "party brawler," supporting up to 4 players locally or online. Whether you're running the obstacle course or playing battle royale, the ability to punch, kick, and use weapons against your opponents during sports makes for hilarious, high-energy competition with friends. The "Edit Mode", which allows you to create your own characters and teams, with over 25 teams and 100+ characters to unlock, is really good, kinda reminds of Worms. There is a surprising amount of single-player progression and nostalgic fanservice for longtime followers of the franchise. The only thing that I didn't like in this game is its prebuilt/predefined controls—you can't change control keys to your liking, which honestly makes the game really uncomfortable to play at times. And the game doesn't even warn or tell you which keys are for what. I am sure everyone who started this game for the first time had to smash their keyboards just to proceed to the main menu. However in general, as a big of River City Girls fan I recommend this game, it still has its …
Good!
This game ruined my childhood memories of the authentic Kunio. Poor controls, poor gameplay functions, and terrible UX design. You can’t even return to the Steam menu using the controller, such careless design. Very disappointed.
I was wondering why the direct sequel to River City Ransom never came to the west. If I recall the original for this was a Japan exclusive on the NES (Or Famicom if you're a stickler.) This could have used more polish when "remaking" it, my main issues with this game being (especially the first thing in this list): -Randomized Stat Gains: The single player campaign uses Random Number Generation for your created characters stats, these let you move faster, hit harder, not die better, etc. These are assigned usually after you clear a round in the area of 4-12 sport events with the first round being unusually merciful on you needing only one race, don't get used to this. There are times when doing everything right will get you only a single point of endurance, to counter this middle finger the game gave you for playing well, you will be forced to Alt+F4 the game to redo the round you just did for no apparent reason, which is pretty much awful game design. You're going to be needing those stats and not just for the achievement, because most of your opponents have better stats and moves than you do, I found it more difficult earlier on for this reason since you start at literally not…
BeatEmUps (brawler) = KungFuMaster -> RiverCity (Kunio-kun) -> DoubleDragon
