Overview
Hello, Caecus here!
I'm proudly presenting you my 3-month university project, which is this small rogue-like combat game called Ruins of Albion.
In this game, you will have to test your skills and fast reactions, since the basic combat revolves around both melee and ranged attacks. This means that you will have to constantly go in and out of fights while trying to avoid everything that the enemies throw at you. Things get even more interesting when you unlock 2 additional abilities, elemental Arrows and Traps, which should help you on your journey. Finally, you can also obtain a number of different Rune Effects, that give you passive bonuses which will further increase your combat capabilities.
  • Master the power of the arcane magic and learn how to use both ranged and melee attacks
  • Defeat more than 20 unique enemies
  • Test your skills against 6 different bosses
  • Last long enough to overcome waves of enemies inside arenas
  • Explore 3 unique biomes
  • Blast the enemies with 6 different unlockable Elemental Arrows
  • Trick the enemies with 6 different unlockable Elemental Traps
  • Play around with 12 unique Rune Passive Effects
  • Upgrade your stats with Health and Damage Fragments
  • Complete 7 different achievements
  • Prove your skills in an alternative Boss Rush Mode

"Ruins of Albion" is a roguelike (read: soulless procgen) top down brawler/shooter with lightweight RPG elements, looks a bit more like a console game than a PC game, and thankfully doesn't cost very much. I guess the chief problem is the combat is imperfect, I found I had a lot of problems keeping distance from the enemies and I don't really enjoy games that rely on dash mechanics all that much anyway. The graphics in this game are passable, but could be better. They look like low poly/cartoony mobile phone game graphics. And while it's vital for any game to have impressive visuals (gaming is a visual medium, after all), there's more to a game than just the graphics. To be worth a gamers time, the game must match top tier visuals with top tier gameplay, and that's not happening here. The developer chose not to do the job of a real game developer and create meaningful bespoke levels, narrative based gameplay progression and so on. Instead, they decided that "Procgen IS content!" and lazily tried to use procgen algorithms to create infinite, samey, repetitive, soulless levels, because that's a lot less work. As a result of this poor decision, the game gets tired and repetiti…

pretty short game depending on how skilled you are (and how much experience you have with roguelikes I guess.) but it's free and fun, so being short is fine.

great game, one of the first games that introduced me to the roguelike genre, unfortunately this game no longer has any additional content

Fun multi range/melee roguelike, feels refined for a student project

It has a lot of promise honestly. With a bit more care added extra items and longer dungeon with more levels of replay-ability this could be a really awesome game.

For a free roguelike Ruins of albion is actually pretty solid to be honest, the combat is basic but fun, with a high degree of skill and some depth. However it's the audiovisual presentation of the game that really impressed me. I really liked the looks of the enviroments with the low poly style and colourfull assets to the cute but quirky characters and mysterious enemy designs. The music also was much better than i had thought, reminding me a bit of 'Spyro dawn of the dragons' at times, which is one of my favorite childhood games. Now despite the moderately difficult combat i did manage to beat my first run within an hour and i'm perfectly content to leave it at that. I wouldn't want to play this game for dozens of hours but it was a really fun side distraction and more than anything it made me even more excited to follow this devs' upcoming works. I stumbled upon 'The caecus' youtube channel a while back and while i did refund Ascendum (it was too hard for me) i still gave it a thumbs up because this guy has a solid artistic vision. All of that to say that i'm VERY excited about Mendacium as it is a metroidvania (easily my favorite game genre) while also looking like his most be…
