About Rustler (Grand Theft Horse)

✦ AI summary

Play as a nameless bald thug causing medieval mayhem in this top-down GTA-style sandbox filled with twisted missions, absurd humor, and anachronistic chaos like automatic crossbows and holy hand grenades. Steal horses, join the Grand Tournament, betray allies, and embrace the Monty Python-inspired ridiculousness as you wreak havoc across a hilariously broken feudal world.

Grand Theft… Horse

Rustler is an open-world, top-down action game paying tribute to the good old GTA style and gameplay, fusing it with a historically inaccurate medieval setting. Play as The Guy, whose parents apparently were too lazy to give him a proper name. Experience feudal injustice, inquisition, witch-hunting, and join The Grand Tournament. Meet valiant, yet incredibly stupid knights. Complete a wide variety of twisted missions and quests, or don’t give a damn about the plot and bring mayhem in the villages and cities. Choose to go on foot, or by a stolen horse. Fight with a sword or pick a fancy automatic crossbow. All that, spiced up with an inappropriate Monty Python inspired sense of humor.

Be a bold, bald thug in a medieval sandbox

Rustler’s world is filled with humor, anachronisms, and pop culture references. Ever been towed for parking in a “NO HORSE ZONE”? Wanna do some cage fights in Medieval Martial Arts Arena? Or maybe pimp-a-horse a little? How about joining the Round-Earthers sect?

Wreak havoc in top-down, old-school combat

Use swords, spears, turds, and crossbows. Want to get more efficient? Try holy hand grenades or… horses. Nothing’s more deadly than hooves galloping in your direction. Or drifting a cart.

Screw everyone over to win half the kingdom

As a poor peasant, you really need to get creative in order to win the Grand Tournament™. Form weird alliances, double-cross your foes, and dig up dinosaur skeletons in a light, easy-to-understand, and hard-to-empathize-with story.

Hire bards to aid you musically in battle

A bard can be your sweaty personal radio. Not only will he not leave your side, even in the midst of the bloodiest of conflicts, he will also change the song's dynamic depending on the action on-screen. Moreover, you can express a desire to change the tune by punching him in the face.

A lot of horsin’ around

Shoot cows into the sky, dress up as a guard or even Death himself, burn entire piles of weed, draw fancy shapes with a plowing cart, survive a full-on guard onslaught after killing half the city… And that’s only a few of the many crazy things you can do in Rustler.

This medieval take on classic GTA is full of injokes and sarcastic references in a dumb but good self-aware kind of way. If you're finicky about having controls really polished you might have a hard time -- but honestly I found that there are a ton more pros than cons to getting this game for the laughs you'll have.

this game has a lot of potential, i understand it's trying to be reminiscent of the old gta top-down games, but the camera angle is awful, the way it changes when you go through an alley is worse. I just couldn't get past it. if i could at least rotate the camera myself, i might be able to get into it. but the camera angle and lack of control feels like it clashes with literally every other mechanic of the game. is it was fully top down, and had just a 2d world, like the gta games it's trying to emulate, the camera angle would work. but in this game, which, otherwise, while not gold, would be a fun little medieval chaos game like postal or gta, it just makes it difficult to enjoy. I'm glad I waited until this game was on sale based on that alone. I genuinely think if you just gave players more freedom with the camera, the game would suddenly become a B reel hit. but as it is, I can't force myself to play it. and i enjoy a lot of retro, isometric, top down games, it's not just me being spoiled by modern mechanics- there's something seriously janky with the camera in this game and it's holding back what could be a decent game. I'll be keeping and periodically checking in instead …

I don't usually write reviews but Rustler genuinely surprised me and I've enjoyed every minute. It's basically what you'd get if classic GTA met medieval times, and somehow it just works. The humour is ridiculous in the best way, the quests are entertaining, and there's always something that distracts you from what you were originally planning to do. The game doesn't take itself too seriously, and I think that's part of its charm. Riding around causing absolute chaos never really gets old. It's not a massive AAA game, and it doesn't try to be. It knows exactly what it is and commits to it, which I actually respect. I also picked up the DLC, and I'd honestly recommend it if you're enjoying the base game. The extra content, cosmetics, and little perks make the experience feel even more complete without taking away from what already makes the game fun. If you're looking for something different with plenty of laughs, personality, and endless medieval chaos, I'd definitely recommend giving Rustler a chance. Highly recommended.
