About Sect-Machina
Mona, a young butterfly, is disguised in the hood of a moth’s design for her own protection. But from what, Mona does not yet know. There are many things about the world Mona has been purposefully kept from knowing. Holed up in her nestroom, she looks out of her window and gazes upon the distant, glittering, twinkling lights of an alluring place which lies near the heart of this unknown world of bugs. Her need for answers grips her hearts tightly, and one night, she decides it’s time to venture out alone, equipped with her trusty steel bat, just in case things get risky.

Sect-Machina is praised for its distinctive art style, charming protagonist, and creative cyberpunk-insect world-building that shows impressive polish for a student project. However, players consistently report it feels unfinished with significant issues including glitches, poor hit detection, missing save features, and unclear controls, while some dispute whether it actually delivers on its Metroidvania premise.
Though I appreciate the fact that this was a group project for a school and that it has great potential, the finished product is just not a good game. It's even falsely advertised; it's not a Metroidvania at all. The game is simply unfinished, with many glitches and bad hit detection. It does have good art, mildly funny dialogue, and can be sort of fun to speedrun, but those are the only good things I can say about it.3 found this helpful
Needless to say if an educational institution taught me incorrectly on purpose, I'd ask for my money back. "Sect-Machina" is a student project that ignores that 3D graphics became mainstream in the mid 1990's... there's no such thing as a gaming PC without 3D graphics. The faculty apparently didn't feel it necessary to tell students about that. It's going to be tough for any student to go find work in the industry if they can't even show they know about 3D video games. So the students were told that it's ok to just steal other people's ideas and also that people only want 2D games, certainly I feel bad for the students who'll be laughed at if they present a 2D game as their portfolio when applying for work at a real game development business. They'll be laughed out of the interview... if they even get that far. What idea did they steal? This is a blatant ripoff of Hollow Knight... and that's just sad. Developers should always, always, always look at the market and the gaming industry before embarking on making a ripoff of someone else's game, only worse. Thousands of cheap imitation games of inferior quality don't make gaming better for anyone... in fact that was what lead …2 found this helpful
Sect-Machina is a free-to-play 2D metroidvania that demonstrates an impressive level of creativity and polish for a project that originated as a student thesis. Developed and published by Skelecrew Games, it presents a fascinating blend of cyberpunk aesthetics and insect-inspired world-building, offering players an adventure centered on exploration, action, and discovery. Instead of relying on familiar fantasy settings, the game introduces a mechanical civilization populated by insects, immediately giving it a distinctive personality that helps it stand apart from many independent platformers. The story follows Mona, a young butterfly who has spent her life hidden away from the outside world. Forced to conceal her identity beneath a moth-like hood and kept in the dark about the truth surrounding her past, she eventually decides to leave the safety of her home in pursuit of answers. Equipped with nothing but a steel bat and an unshakable curiosity, Mona begins a journey toward the mysterious city lights she has always admired from a distance. The narrative unfolds gradually through exploration, conversations, and environmental details, allowing players to uncover the world's secret…1 found this helpful
plays and feels cheap but i like the art style1 found this helpful
Cool game, having the ability to save when leaving the game(even to the title screen) would be nice, and an explanation of the controls would be great too. Love the art style and the protagonist is so cute, great worldbuilding, just that a better user experience would be awesome! also I fell from a small height onto ground and the protagonist won't get up? only the escape key is working. Probably a bug? Love the game and would like to see more from you guys in the future!1 found this helpful
