Shantae: Risky's Revenge - Director's Cut

[h1]𝔸 𝕥𝕚𝕟𝕪 𝕘𝕖𝕞 𝕨𝕚𝕥𝕙 𝕒 𝕓𝕚𝕘 𝕡𝕖𝕣𝕤𝕠𝕟𝕒𝕝𝕚𝕥𝕪 [/h1] Hop on your boat and prepare your pirate hat, because this is about to get... magical. Enter Shantae: Risky's Revenge, an underrated gem from the 3DS era where you play as a genie called Shantae who is tasked with saving Scuttle Town from the evil pirate Risky Boots. After a series of events, the genie Shantae is sent on her way to collect three soul shards to be able to end Risky's reign and recover a stolen artifact: a lamp. Don't ask me how it makes sense, it does not. What DOES make sense, however, are the smooth movements, the platforming, the unique powers Shantae has up her sleeve, and how her unique attack is to whip enemies up using her hair, it kinda reminds me of one very classic NES game that I've recently played, but I'll not go into that. Of course, since Risky's Revenge is a run-of-the-mill platformer, you'd get new powers later in the game and have to backtrack to be able to collect, well, collectibles among other things. Really great game, but the platforming is going to be the death of me

That recent Humble Bundle is the golden opportunity to check which Shantae games are actually good as opposed to just having good presentation. I keep getting lost in this one! Ugh! Thumbs down! Also it's very goofy that you can't swap confirm/cancel without also remapping jump. Well at least it allows me to pretend I'm Japanese, like that guy in Monster.

A great little side scrolling adventure with a few puzzles and some decent exploration. The cast is pretty goofy and the story is never too serious, even when touching on some more serious notes. Would highly recommend to metroidvania or side scrolling fans.

Listen, you all came here for the sexy genie lady. You're going to ignore her after like 5 minutes of gameplay. Steam says I have 4,6 hours on record. The in-game completion says 3.5 hours, so who knows what happened there. Maybe some browsing while in game. Not only is the play time exceptionally short, even for a NOW relatively cheap game (10 bucks), there also isn't REALLY any replay value. You can start again, and finish the game in under 2 hours or with all items found ... to unlock A post-credits screen, which is just fan service. You can also just look it up online .-. The setting overall, the graphics and the music are quite nice, and the game runs fluently and controls "okay". It also didn't crash. Yay. As for the meat of the game ... the gameplay is archaic. Maybe you love that, maybe you don't. Personally, I'm not a fan. Any QoL stuff from the past 20 years is almost wholly absent here. Auto saves? Nope. You need to find one of the few save points, then manually save each time. So, no quitting out before you get to one, which can take a while. And if you should die in between. Bad luck. There ARE actually fast travel points ... but they're useless for 90% of the gam…
