Slash-Out: Fantasy Dueling

Been playing for just over an hour now, tried the demo first to see what it was like, and decided to give it a go. It’s not just one duel after another, many of them have introductory cutscenes, there’s a story there, and for me at least, it’s an important component. Gameplay is quite simple to learn, blocking with the shield and performing combos with the sword (gamepad suggested). The only thing that doesn’t quite convince me is the special attack, which you have to charge up, and I don’t think it’s worth the time it takes. Everything else is brilliant, the graphics are really cool, with that sort of textureless 3D look, with edges are highlighted in colour. Plus, the fights have different phases, so they escape monotony, and an enemy can have lots of different attack patterns. It doesn’t take up much space, so trying the demo will only take a minute (though, if it hooks you, it’ll take much longer). Very Punch Out, very impressive for a solo project! Having a lot of fun so far.

The gameplay along with the graphics gives Slash-Out a very unqiue experience that is really enjoyable. I enjoyed that It doesnt waste your time, it is a shorter game that just lets you get right into what it has to offer. Overall a really fun experience that I say is definitely worth your time.

A first person fighting game that's a lot like, yes, Punch-Out, except it's fantasy and you have a sword, which means it's much better. There is no exploration, puzzles or anything, just boss fights with a tiny bit of story between them. You can't walk or dodge during combat (just in case: you can't walk outside combat either), you can only block in four directions, swing your sword in four directions and shield bash. But you can't just attack the enemy whenever you want. It's the opponent who dictates the tempo of the fight and you learn to react to their moves. Fundamentally not my kind of a game, but I had a lot of fun 100%ing it. The visuals are very nice and unique, the OST pretty good as well, the game itself works without problems and it's pretty cheap for what it offers. PS: I recommend remapping shield bash from LB/L1 to RB/R1 in settings unless you actually use LB/L1 and LT/L2 with two different fingers. If you use one finger for them both, it might be too hard to alternate between them quickly enough, and you use the two buttons a lot. [spoiler]Objectively:[/spoiler] 8.9/10

Halfway through the game. I really love the art style, and every fight is unique in both the overall theme and fighting style.
