About Snares of Ruin

Synopsis

You are detective Hank Anderson , and you’ve just been transferred to another city to help solve a series of unusual crimes. Upon arrival, you are greeted with a gory scene and a revelation of several instances of a deadly disease that turns people into savage zombie-like husks. Upon closer inspection, it appears there’s more to all this, and peculiar events do not stop. It is up to you now to solve this mystery and find out who or what has caused this.

During your investigation, you will have to make choices, find allies, and improve your abilities, for all this will affect how the story shapes up. You will meet fascinating female characters throughout. What kind of relationship you forge with each one of them is up to you, but be aware that your relationships with the ladies will impact the investigation one way or another.

Features

  • A detective story with choice and consequence, set in a modern-day urban fantasy world.
  • 6 female characters to romance, all unique in some way, ranging from a sexy vampire to a cute elf!
  • Build romantic or platonic relationships with the ladies in a variety of ways: dialogue options, sidequests, and even take them out on dates.
  • Choose to specialise in athletics, charisma, erudition, or mix and match those abilities to open up new ways of tackling the missions.
  • Your stance with each lady could affect the flow of events, their interactions with you and each other, as well as their final fate.

RPG Maker strikes again! "Snares of Ruin" is one of hundreds of low effort retro-pixel RPG Maker asset/construction kit flips spamming the Steam catalog, made with the RPG Maker video game construction kit... in their own words, "Our easy to use tools are simple enough for a child." Like all RPG Maker "games", this is essentially a bunch of low quality/canned assets from RPG Maker coupled with a cringeworthy high school anime club fan fiction. As with all RPG Maker games, the poor quality engine displays badly in fullscreen and doesn't have full HD support or any graphics tweaking options, making this unacceptable for any dedicated modern PC gamer. The point can be made that the intention of RPG Maker is to make demos and small games to pass around friends, and shouldn't be used for "professional" game development. Like most RPG Maker shovelware and asset flips, the game features extremely low quality copy + pasted 2D retro pixel art, looks awful, and has even worse gameplay. RPG Maker is an absolutely terrible construction kit, and never results in games of any reasonable quality or value to gamers. Notably the author here couldn't work out how to use RPG Maker to make an R…

Well written characters and intriguing story. A full playthrough is about 5 hours. It's a point and click game, and it has stats that alter how you resolve the mission events depending of how you manage them.

Sometimes taking a chance on the rpgmaker games bin pays off. This is one of those times. Snares Of Ruin is an unexpected game. Its quality spikes are high, but its troughs aren't particularly low either. Honestly, the worst I could say about it, if I was genuinely trying, is that the tilesets look pretty rpgmaker-y, and occasionally that pulls me out of the action. Everything else, however, pulls me back in. Snares Of Ruin has you play as a detective in a fantasy-modern city, working alongside zombies, elves, vampires, etc to solve a complex case involving an epidemic. The world-building is surprisingly great, and the writing is mostly pretty solid, apart from a few awkward-feeling sentences and stiff characterizations. Gameplay consists of walking from point to point, but also making critical decisions on how to approach problems and what to do with your spare time. There's even some Phoenix Wright style detective work, and a fairly limited economy where you can get cash from perfecting cases, and spend it on a variety of opportunities that can change your stats and the outcome of your mission. You have three stats, Athletics, Erudition, and Charisma, and you get points to …

Snares of Ruin is a story-focused RPG developed by Astronomic Games and published by New Reality Games that blends detective investigation, supernatural horror, romance elements, and urban fantasy into a surprisingly ambitious indie experience. Built with a strong emphasis on narrative and player choice, the game places players in the role of detective Hank Anderson, a man transferred to a troubled city plagued by brutal murders and the spread of a mysterious infection turning ordinary people into violent creatures. What initially feels like a grounded crime investigation slowly unfolds into something far more sinister involving hidden conspiracies, supernatural beings, and forces operating beneath the surface of the city. The game immediately establishes a dark and uneasy atmosphere through its writing and worldbuilding. Rather than rushing players into nonstop action, Snares of Ruin focuses on slowly developing tension through dialogue, investigation, and exploration. The city itself feels dangerous and unpredictable, with every new clue revealing deeper layers of corruption and mystery. As Hank investigates the strange outbreak and the growing number of murders, the narrative g…
