a mashup of word games and sokoban. What an interesting and fun game! Initially, I was just expecting a challenging Scrabble-like game. It is that. But it also has a very well done puzzle element having to with figuring out what words are needed. That, with the expected aspect of having to make the words makes it interesting and challenging as well. I really like figuring out how to unlock words to make other words. If you like word games, i recommend it.2 found this helpful
Spell Slide is a thoughtfully designed puzzle game that takes the familiar concept of word-building and merges it with clever grid-based problem solving. Developed and published by Lonely Deckchair, the game offers a refreshing twist on traditional word puzzles by asking players not only to recognize words but also to manipulate letters across puzzle boards. This combination of vocabulary challenges and spatial reasoning creates an experience that feels unique within the puzzle genre. Rather than relying on fast reactions or memorization, the game rewards patience, planning, and creative thinking. The core gameplay revolves around sliding letters around a map to construct valid words and unlock progress. While the premise sounds simple at first, the mechanics gradually evolve into something much deeper. Levels introduce word-locked pathways, collectible diamonds, environmental obstacles, and increasingly sophisticated puzzle layouts that require careful consideration of every move. Players must think about both the words they can create and the positioning of letters on the board, making each puzzle feel like a blend of a crossword challenge and a classic logic game. A wonderful twist on the sokoban "genre" that doesn't overstay its welcome. These are smart, tightly designed puzzles that combine some relatively basic word puzzles with some more complex block-pushing puzzles. Every 9 or so levels, a new major rule or idea is introduced in a way that makes you reframe how you think about these puzzles. It's not the prettiest game, but the gameplay is quite solid and it's a great puzzler.1 found this helpful
I'm about 2/5ths of the way through this at the time of review (for a projected playtime of around 4-5 hours). This is a really 'thinky' game - deceptively simple at first, requiring the player to move letters Sokoban style to form words for the pictured items, but introducing new mechanics as the game progresses. Thinking outside the box (no pun intended) is required on some of later levels, in relation to both what words are needed to be formed and how to form them. I think this is very competitively priced for the amount of entertainment. Looking forward to seeing what challenges await in the rest of the game!1 found this helpful
Yeah, I'll recommend it, but with a bunch of caveats. For starters, it's a neat, innovative idea bursting with creative mechanics scattered across different modes. The issue might come with scope, as the English language is quite robust, and with the game's registry allowing two-letter words like "RE" and "RA", alongside obscure words like "MAELSTROM" and "SLOOP", there becomes so much leeway it can get tricky to predict the developer's intended solutions. Second, and probably the hardest indictment of this mash-up's shortcomings, is just the gosh darn amount of blocks that need to be moved within the constricted space. Could have as many as 20 tiles you have to configure, then re-configure, and configure yet again! Just became laborious unless you sketched out the exact plan of action, punishing experimentation. Again, there's a lot of cool ideas in here, and some just work better than others.
