About Starshifter

Starshifter is a game about shapeshifting, desert animals, and finding your place.

You play as Coyote, one of the Guardians tasked with maintaining balance on the earth. Each Guardian has been gifted a power by the stars to help them protect the land from Darkness, but Coyote has no powers. One evening, a meteor shower causes the stars to fall from the sky, rendering the animals powerless to the spirits of the night who wish to reclaim the stars for themselves. Coyote, the only one used to being powerless, now takes up the Guardian role to return the stars. Coyote learns how to harness their new shapeshifting ability and uses it to explore farther than they ever could before.

There are four planned biomes, each populated with a variety of animals, like birds, deer, fox, bison, beavers, cougars, and more. You'll be able to talk to the other animals, learning more about them and helping them in their own quests, and even interact with them in cutscenes. As you collect more stars, your shapeshifting ability will grow, allowing you to reach higher places or fly for longer. Will you be able to retrieve all the stars and earn your right as a Guardian?

Explore the heights in the form of a crow, or narrow tunnels as a small weasel - there's no shortage of cliffs or caves to see, and many stars to collect in each biome. Stop Darkness from spreading by bringing back the light!

And yes, you can spam the bark.

I REALLY want to like this game, the concept is really exciting, but after playing it for a little while I have to say it doesn't really feel like a complete or necessarily even really very playable game. Moving around in coyote form feels clunky and difficult to maneuver. There's no sense of being an agile, clever creature that seems like should be. Flight as a crow can stretch further if you use it right than you'd expect from its challenges, but intuitively it feels like you slow down way too fast and managing speed feels awkward and precarious. Combat with the dark creatures feels awkward (due to the awkward controls) and it isn't really clear whether you're "supposed" to fight the rats, since fighting is hard and they keep respawning for at least enough waves to feel like the fight might go on indefinitely. Defeating the very first enemy in the game feels like way more a challenge than it should be if is actually intended to, thanks to the controls. I didn't find the weasel form, though the game settings indicate it exists and so do other reviews, which seem indicate there's more content in the game that's actually reachable. There's a lack of easily findable signals as to…

I really enjoyed playing through this game. The art style is absolutely amazing, and the soundtrack is very immersive and cozy. The game also features a nice mix of small puzzles and quests, along with an interesting story.

Will wait for the game to be finished. At this state I found it to be unplayable. My PC crashed (Not really game related), when I opened my save again, it put me back in the tutorial, nowhere near the tutorial spawn point, and I had to look where the crow was to interact with it and get rid of control tutorial message. Could not delete my save, nor start a new one. Game and story looks cool tho and I'm really looking forward to when it's finished ! But this is so unfinished it feels like a free itch.io demo

If you're looking to play a cute game as a Coyote, or you're a fan of Native American Trickster Coyote you're going to enjoy this game. the art style is cute, movement feels satisfying, and the various side-quests helping various animals is heart warming. If you're going for 100% I can attest that sometimes the collectables dont load in, sometimes you have to reset the level or return to menu so that the collectable (or the animal to return it to) loads in. also, I got a bug where it gave me the achievement for clearing the marshlands and 100% the game, but when I do the "star-view" ability it says I only have 30 out of 31 stars, soooo idk if im missing one or if the counter didnt tick up! //shrugs (trying to say this as least spoiler-y as possible) prob the most frustrating part is the Marshland boss; conceptually I think its really cool and lets you exercise your prowess flying around as crow, but the Rock you reuse in the fight will sometimes fling off into one of (five or six?) random locations, two of which will clip the rock beyond the floor of the boss arena. so in order to beat it, youll have to reset the level/return to menu and hope that the RNG lets you pick…
