Tabletop Playground is best understood not as a conventional game, but as a flexible digital space designed to recreate—and expand—the experience of tabletop gaming. Developed by Plasticity Studios and published by Modularity, it offers a physics-driven sandbox where players can simulate board games, card games, and entirely custom creations. Rather than guiding players through a predefined experience, it provides tools, systems, and a shared environment, leaving the actual “game” to be defined by those who use it. With Tabletop Simulator announcing a plan to pull a Skyrim upon its modding community, I started searching for alternatives to jump to, and this is really the only one. It's not 10 years old like TTS is, but it still looks like it has plenty of polish; the only thing I can fault it for so far is that no one's here yet. You might not be getting a lot out of this right now, but I'm sure I'll have more to say about this once TTS implodes and I have the opportunity to actually try this—which is why I want you to pick this up too.

Worked out of the box on my Linux distribution (Bazzite) and the in-game mod manager (vs the Steam Workshop) made getting new games seamless. The level of support and adoption by players is low so you won't have everything available to you like you would with TTS, but what it has works great.

As an semi-pro developer of digital implementations of physical games I was skeptical about switching from TTS. But I've been impressed with this upstart competitor and I'm happy they are still around after a number of years. I haven't released any paid board game modules since making the switch, but this is the one I use now for my personal game design/development and online playtesting. They just keep improving it, so I can see they are in for the long haul. The numerous advantages it has over the competition are well worth the slight learning curve of switching.
