Teatime Samurai is a wonderfully ridiculous little arcade shooter, and I had a lot of fun with how seriously it treats such a silly premise. I am basically a samurai returning to an old dojo for tea, only to discover that the place has been overrun by zombies, skeletons and all kinds of bizarre creatures inspired by Japanese folklore. The whole thing has a goofy sense of humor, but underneath that it is a surprisingly focused arcade game. The main gameplay is a twin stick shooter where I move around the screen while throwing fireballs at huge groups of enemies. The part I found most interesting is that my lantern uses oil whenever I attack, which also affects how much of the area I can see. That creates a really nice risk and reward system because firing constantly can leave me with much less visibility. I enjoyed having to think about when to attack and when to preserve my resources. The enemy variety helps keep the action entertaining. I am not just fighting ordinary undead, as the game throws increasingly ridiculous creatures and attacks at me. The bosses are especially memorable because they lean heavily into the game's sense of humor while still providing a decent challenge.…

"Teatime Samurai" is a laughably badly made 2D retro pixel top down twin stick shooter with a vague "tea time in ancient Japan" theme that doesn't make sense and certainly doesn't help the terrible delivery. The most enjoyable part of this game is the thought that the developer genuinely thought people would give him money for this. What do you do in the game? Really bad twin stick shooting, that's it. Shallow and pointless. There's no option to change the resolution and no useful graphics tweaks. There's no way to ensure this is running at the native resolution of your display. There's no guarantee this game will look right on any PC as a result of this hamfisted design decision. This features really godawful pixelcrap "art" instead of real graphics. It's hard to say if this was because the developer didn't have the skill to do the job of creating 3D visuals, or couldn't afford to hire someone who does, but it also doesn't matter. What matters is that this looks much worse than most other games because of that decision, and that's a major deterrent to gamers.
