About TENGAI

For many years, a renowned general ruled the eastern plains. Then, one day, he changed completely. He placed an eerie army under his command and, calling it a “hunt for living spirits,” forcibly summoned women of all ranks to his castle.
TENGAI — Branching Stages, Brutal Bullets, Pure Arcade Energy
TL;DR: A classic Psikyo-style horizontal shooter with sharp controls, mean aimed bullets, and stage branching that keeps runs feeling different. Great for score-chasers, and surprisingly fun in drop-in 2P.
[1] Intro :
TENGAI feels like a time capsule from the “arcade wants your lunch money” era—in the best way. It’s a horizontal shooter built around fast pattern reading, spicy aimed shots, and that unmistakable Psikyo attitude. The hook is simple: pick a hero, learn the routes, and survive long enough to see how the branching stages reshape your run.
[2] Game Experience :
World & Systems: The core loop is pure shmup fundamentals: move, shoot, bomb, and route. Controls are clean and old-school (8-direction movement + two buttons), but there’s nuance—charging shots for powerful attacks and grabbing power-ups that also equip your “options” (support units). The aimed bullets are the real personality: they punish sloppy positioning, but they also make dodging feel skillful instead of random. Leaderboards and dedicated score modes push you to tighten routes an…

My favorite shmup. In fact it's the only shmup I really got into. Character based + horizontal + shinto asthetic + short but intense + no convoluted mechanics. You feel powerful and every shot is impactful. It's just the best combination.

A Hidden Arcade Gem – Tengai Tengai is one of those arcade games that instantly reminds you why the golden age of arcades was so special. Developed by Psikyo, it takes the classic vertical shoot ’em up formula and adds a fantastic twist with its Japanese folklore setting, colorful characters, and incredible pixel art. Instead of the usual fighter jets and spaceships, you play as characters inspired by Japanese mythology, battling through stages filled with yokai, strange creatures, and imaginative bosses. The visual style is vibrant and full of personality, with beautiful sprites and charming animations that still hold up extremely well today. The gameplay is fast, tight, and challenging in the best arcade tradition. Enemy patterns keep you on your toes, bosses are memorable, and every run feels exciting whether you're playing for score or just trying to survive the chaos. Like many Psikyo shooters, the difficulty ramps up quickly, but it never feels unfair—just demanding enough to keep you coming back for “one more credit.” Another highlight is the soundtrack, which perfectly complements the fantasy setting and energetic gameplay. If you enjoy arcade shooters, retro pixel art…

I’ve been meaning to buy Tengai because I played this game as a kid in front of a video rental store, and remembered how I enjoyed it very much. Yes, not an arcade, but at a video rental store. I couldn’t, however, because while waiting for a sale, and having to buy other games that I wanted to play more — who would prioritize this one over any other game? — the publisher pulled the game off the steam store list. I thought that was that. I had to accept the fact that I wouldn’t be able to play the game any longer. When I did, the game came back to the store. What the heck? Anyway, I got it as fast as I could, right? In fact, this time, I bought all the other ones to finish the collection. I finally got to enjoy the fun and nostalgia, though brief as it was. Kind of regret buying the game now to be honest, but at least I wouldn’t have to wonder or look at the store page now and then and second guess myself.
