About The End of an Actress

Based on the life (and death) of Marie Antoinette, The End of an Actress is a tragic romance story set in a fantasy universe with close parallels to late 18th century France.

The kingdom of Artoire was once a force to be reckoned with. Governed by a string of beloved kings, the nation was wealthy, its people prosperous. That was in the past, however. Now, Artoire’s fortunes are dwindling as constant wars and food shortages sweep the land. After innumerable hard years, the people of Artoire begin to despair. Fearing for the worst, they search for a messiah who can save them during their time of peril…

And that messiah comes in the form of a fourteen-year-old girl called Liliane.

Liliane is a beautiful, charming, elegant young lady from the foreign land of Charentes, born to the noble Saint-Coeurs. Betrothed to the future king of Artoire, Liliane ascends to the throne upon the death of the old monarch, to public approval and rapturous applause.

With the passing of time, however, the public opinion towards Liliane turns. It soon transpires that the new queen is vain and flighty, and she cares not one jot about the plight of the common people. The death toll continues to rise, new wars loom on the horizon, and despair swells.

Betrayed and helplessly hurt, a young man called Marius becomes a key player in a revolt that will shake the society of Artoire to its very core. Once a street urchin enamoured with the queen, and now a lead revolutionary, Marius is faced with a difficult decision. Can he really bring the queen he once adored to justice… or will his old feelings ruin all he has been working for?

I love history and ebi-hime's writing but even with this positive mindset I enjoyed reading this novel even more than I expected. It's based on Marie Antoinette's incarceration. Though I can't say I remember a lot about this real historical figure, even I knew how her life ended but even this way the story managed to surprise me several times plot-wise, I found absolutely all outcomes just perfect though all of them tragic in different extent. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3569868176 The story focuses not on politics but character development and personal relationship and I really appreciate that. The beginning was quite dire, I found the queen unbearably infuriating, so despite this grim way of thinking I enjoyed my first fast 'tragic' ending of
killing her with my own hands
⋋_⋌ I guess all that suffering, starvation, war, deaths, betrayed hope touched me too much, so even having learnt more about queen's true situation (though it was rather obvious anyway, if one can think logically, how powerless that teenage girl truly was to change drastically the whole country's fate), even then I couldn't fully forgive her selfish, arrogant, stub…

While finding this VN aesthetically gorgeous, I must say that the story didn't quite keep me as invested as I initially expected. The art and music are lovely, and I enjoyed the historical setting and intriguing premise of the plot! Additionally, the main characters, as well as the dynamic between them (and its development) fairly interested me. Altogether I found the experience quite pleasant, however in my opinion, something about the plot depth is a bit lacking. Despite the limited "room" for action, due to the confined setting, I was hoping for perhaps at least some more complexity in the introspections or just any kind of variety in the scenes. I find the VN sweet, but would suggest buying it on a discount! [strike]Liliane did nothing wrong btw[/strike]

Inconsistent CG and story. Each choice is end the story or continue. And so 4 times. Boring and predictable.

I kind of wish we'd gotten at least one epilogue for Marius, but, the game is quite good. You cannot change much in the story, but each of the main 4 endings has been carefully and meticulously written (there are five but one is a very fast short ending), Cannot quite believe how much I ended up shipping Marius and Liliane, but here we are regardless. May they find a happy-ish ending in Ao3 if not in their canon game, welp.
