What Steam players say
Recent verbatim reviews from Steam — separate from playze.io community reviews below.
Players praise The Evil Within's strong atmosphere, effective scares, and engaging gameplay loop that combines action with horror, featuring cool characters and a satisfying upgrade system. However, the game suffers from significant technical issues on modern hardware, including a broken frame limiter and persistent stuttering that require manual workarounds to fix, which frustrates players trying to experience the game smoothly.
even though this game can feel pretty convoluted at times, i mostly enjoyed it. it has good scary moments, the atmosphere is very well done and the overall gameplay is fun.2 found this helpful
After beating Evil Within on the difficulty where you die in one hit to everything, i realized i never made a review. I really like almost everything about this game. Cool characters, neat upgrade system, and interesting environment. I enjoy action in my horror games so this always sits in memory. I am sad we will never see more of this story but worse has happened to other games of old...like Banjo Kazooie. Either way this game is very much worth a play even if you do not play on AKUMU (die instantly to everything) difficulty. It feels good to fight off the evils within the levels and watch the detective get stronger. Easily about a 9 outta 10 for me.1 found this helpful
First of all, this game has issues on modern hardware. It has a broken frame limiter which reduces the framerate regardless of hardware. To fix it you have to add this "+r_swapinterval 0" command to the games's launch options. To do that, open you steam library right click the game and click on the Properties tab, and paste the command (without "") in the Launch Options box. This fixes the frame limiter however the game still has stutter and bad framepacing even if you limit it at 60. To fix this you need to limit the framerate to 60 in MSI Afterburner, using RivaTuner in addition to limiting the "Scanline Sync" option to 60 which is located just beneath the framerate limit option in RIvaTuner. You can also add the "+com_skipIntroVideo 1" command to skip the annoying intro splash screen that plays everytime you boot the game. This game also has noticeable texture pop in in cutscenes, to fix that you need to add the +fs_cachepath "C:\TheEvilWithinCache" (keep the "" at the path this time) command and to create an empty TheEvilWithinCache folder in your C: drive (you can point it toward a different location but this is the simplest and easiest path). The game will then creat…1 found this helpful

Good
The Evil Within crafts a disorienting journey through a nightmarish reality where psychological dread meets visceral, physical threats. Moving between the decaying village and the haunting hospital hub creates a cohesive, oppressive world that consistently keeps the player feeling small and uncertain within its gruesome, shifting architecture. Resource scarcity dictates every tactical decision, as counting individual bullets and syringes remains essential for survival against grotesque adversaries. Scavenging for supplies drives the exploration loop forward, forcing a cautious playstyle that prioritises avoiding conflict whenever the constant threat of instant-death encounters becomes too dangerous to face directly. Stealth serves as a necessary refuge, yet inconsistent detection rules occasionally make finding effective cover a frustrating endeavour during high-stakes moments. Basic shrubs offer no protection from patrolling enemies, which forces players to rely heavily on the crossbow to manipulate surroundings and maintain distance from the lethal, mutated threats. Burning corpses to prevent reanimation captures the grim tone, though executing this specific task often f…
