About The Hike

The Hike is a first person horror/survival game in which you must survive the horrors that start while investigating a mysterious emergency message in a simple hike through the Red River National Park. Your chance of making it back to society relies entirely on your legs and flashlight, you're no fighter.

Synopsis

Somewhere in the Red River National Park, at the US Army controlled Red River Mental Hospital, a riot breaks out and the facility is breached. Long after the "patients" broke out, a mysterious emergency message is broadcasted under the authority of a local Ranger Station.

Acting irrationally after hearing the mysterious emergency message, experienced hiker John Lake decides to go and investigate for himself, in what should be an easy hike for him. Once there, he realizes that he has made a big mistake, finding out the hard way the gruesome truth about the real situation as his fading hope of making it back to society relies entirely on a flashlight and his legs.

Features

  • True Survival Experience - You are no fighter. If you want to get back to society, your only chance is to keep running.
  • Immersive Graphics - Realistic graphics featuring 4k textures and immersive sounds.
  • Puzzled Gameplay - The puzzles in the game will make the player think in creative ways in order to escape.
  • Darkness - You mostly rely on your flashlight, without it, you are screwed.

I enjoyed playing this creepy game...but once I ran out of batteries for my flashlight that was it GAME OVER! I sadly couldn't go any further which was very frustrating as I like to finish a game I'm playing.

The Hike is an indie horror title about a man who for some reason decides to take a Hike into mountains where he knows insane asylum inmates are running rampant. Ridiculous premise aside The Hike is a pretty decent indie horror title. Most of the game takes place in a pretty generic looking indie horror asylum setting but it manages to create a surprisingly tense atmosphere in the vein of challenging and long drawn out chase sequences that really are genuinely terrifying. The game has good signposting too, which lots of subtle lighting and less subtle bloody hand-prints showing you where to go. It's quite an intense experience to be running from a deranged maniac who will kill you in a single hit as you scramble through vents looking for signposting with him right behind you. Adrenaline pumping fun. Visually and sound wise the game is nothing special, story wise things are mostly just average however it's the gameplay that shines here and for that alone I recommend this title. Give the Hike a play, an excellent little experience.

Some people can’t deal with jump scares, but they do enjoy the slow, creeping dread of psychological horror combined with intriguing puzzle and exploration elements – this is where The Hike is right at home. Offering a refreshing break from zombies and aliens, The Hike is a fine game to play if you want and arguably scarier alternative to your average gun-toting jump scare-fest. What makes the game so good for me is the well executed golden rule of the survival horror genre: don't empower your players too much. Good survival horror games should always achieve three vital pillar points; player isolation, making the player feel under-powered and making the player feel overwhelmed, and The Hike knocks it out of the park in this category. Sure, there are things to criticize, but for an indie horror game it’s not half bad. At the end of the day, The Hike looks like a promising start to what is hopefully a long-long streak of great releases from this new developer.

A pretty solid effort from this first-time developer on Steam. Most of the early bugs seemed to have been ironed out so I can only speak on its current condition, and for my playthrough it ran smoothly and everything looked good. It's an "escape the facility" type game, seems slightly inspired by games like Outlast and others of the same ilk. The game doesn't exactly break any barriers in the genre, but it's engaging and I found the "maze/labyrinth" element to be well done. Had to check out rooms or areas more than once a few times, but nothing was too difficult and never got stuck for too long. There's also a pretty great climactic chase scene that just never seems to end, no matter how many rooms you plow through or what vents you go through. The Hike is available for a very reasonable price of $3.99, and even if you just hurry through it, there's probably an hour of available gameplay which is a fine rate. I recommend giving it a try!
