Upon learning the severity of the self-inflicted damage, I became almost suicidal. Keep in mind that just a few months before this, I was the happiest man, with no history of depression or anxiety. I had never experienced anger outbursts, nor was I the type to break down and cry, but I was in a tough situation that truly prevented me from seeing the light on the other side. With nothing better to do, I looked for a game I could play WITH ONE HAND while recovering. Somehow, I stumbled upon this game and read some of the comments. I decided it was worth a try... I picked this up expecting very little, but The Last Warlock genuinely surprised me — the turn-based tactical gameplay is deeper than it looks, with a satisfying loop of summoning creatures, crafting gear, and adapting your strategy to each handcrafted level. Flying around on a griffin while strafing enemies with a bow, or building out a zombie front line with wraiths, the game constantly rewards experimentation. The voxel art style is simple but it works — everything reads clearly on the battlefield, and there's a charming quality to it that grows on you. It's clearly inspired by the old Lords of Chaos, and it captures that spirit really well while being more accessible. For the price, this is an easy recommendation for anyone who enjoys turn-based tactics.

A good facsimile of Lords of Chaos. The maps so far are significantly smaller than Lords of Chaos maps, and don't appear to have the random dispersement of goods, which may be a positive or a negative difference - it kind of loses the "gamble" effect that Lords of Chaos had where you could spend your points on dragon summon spells and then not be able to find the ingredients to cast those spells. To some extent that was fun, but it was also annoying, so unknown overall. There's some awkward control issues, which I think are from the decision to make click detection "what is in front of the pointer" rather than "what is on the square that's in front of the pointer", which in 3D often makes it difficult to e.g. summon something on the square "behind" your warlock, you have to spin the camera to make that square accessible, which adds friction. But it's not *as* awkward as the original with its early 90s UI. Also doesn't crash as much as Lords of Chaos did, so that's a positive.
