The Last Winter Knight

Winter Knight is first and foremost a fantastic mood piece. Its visuals, story telling, music, everything is doused in this absolute sense of grief. Mechanically more of a mystery, the player reconstructing not just who done it, but what was done and why and who you are to even care, but all of that is second to the melancholy, the longing for a kinder world that was not and will not be. In some ways Winter Knight is a “””deconstruction””” of the classic tales of of knights, Tourneys, courtly dramas vile temptresses and family drama, but calling that feels utterly crass. The way it takes these things feels more akin to stressing the ideas looking at them harshly but with sympathy, and wishing that the connective tissue of these knightly fantasies were stronger and truer. Instead its a fantasy setting where, warring and feuds are first and foremost utter tragedies. Where winners are more survivors, bitter and torn instead of triumphant in their victory. There is a sense that this story wishes you to look at (almost) every character, not uncritically, but sympathetically. Inversely it asks you to look at every character primed to be loved with criticism as well as your sympathy. …

This is a good, steady burn of a visual novel. I felt a thread of tension every step of the way, pulling me towards the end. More heartbreaking than I expected, but with a dose of belief in the hearts of goods people. The excellent visuals and piano accompaniment work together beautifully to create a compelling atmosphere. Part of me wishes I could stay! Definitely recommend if you enjoy visual novels. At least give the demo a try!

An excellent VN about about grief, the cruelty of the world, forgiveness, and holding fast to love despite it all. If you have a heart, I cannot recommend this highly enough. Even beyond the writing, all aspects of music, sound design, and art were well crafted.

I didn't anticipate getting into this game as much as I did. I was drawn in by the art but the actual trying to pice things together kept me guessing and it was hard to put down. Definetly going to be going back and achievement hunting to see the rest of the routes at some point.

This game touched my soul. Beautiful art, even more beautiful story. Loved every second of it.
