The Space Between is a surreal short narrative experience in three acts about the walls we build for us.
The architect Martin Melanson, commissioned to build a theater, meets a woman named Clara, outside of his apartment complex at night. Attracted to each other, they visit the theater's building site.
While they explore the unfinished stage, surrounded by scaffolds and lost in thoughts, reality slowly fades, where the curtain opens and a dark play about closeness and separation begins.
The game's drawn-out, static nature, embedded in blurred PS1 visuals, supports its surreal plot and dialogues to create a dreamlike 40 - 50 minute experience, that should be played in one sitting.

The Space Between is one of these atmospheric experiences, but something about this "game" really resonated with me. I absolutely adore the art style and vibe it has going for it. The imagery in this, while basic, is so dreamlike and haunting. Something is off about these buildings and rooms but there's also familiar comfort within them. At the same time, there's an uneasy, foreboding sense of dread that lurks beneath everything that perfectly accents its themes. I won't say too much about the story, and some might object to calling it a "story", but I would characterize it as a philosophical meditation on separation and connection (and if that string of words annoys you, you are definitely not going to appreciate this). Another reviewer likens it to a "european artfilm" which is absolutely spot on. I have a couple criticisms, primarily that it is sometimes unclear who is talking (though that honestly could be intentional/symbolic). Plus, it is quite short, taking less than an hour to complete (and there is a really stupid achievement for having the game run for 10 hours), so I'm not a fan of the $5.99 price. On sale however it gets down to $2.39 which I think is absolutely fair…2 found this helpful
A very philosophical and thought provoking story. I think the art style is really good, especially because it becomes quite abstract at times, which also fits the story well. The sound design was also incredible and contributed a lot to the atmosphere. I also think the intentional aspect of having to focus on which character is speaking at certain moments is very well executed.2 found this helpful
I like the idea of this game and the lack of distinction of speakers during text conversation created an interesting kind of confusion that led to thinking more about the meaning of the dialogue. There were times when the movement was tiringly slow and boring, but it didn't ruin the experience. Unfortunately, the incredibly slow pacing of the text did kill the experience for me. That's really all that hampered it, but it felt incredibly grating to be forced to wait so long, especially when the text might be as short as, "yes". One of the achievements required you to spend 10 hours on a single run on the game. No one would ever do this. If you turn off your monitors to AFK this ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ overnight, the game crashes. Trash achievement design and a major bug that should have been fixed before launch, years ago. Add a button to skip the wait between text and fix the game crashing when monitors are turned off, then I would recommend this game.
A somber and atmospheric meditation on loneliness and the walls we build, both real and imagined. Features a great soundtrack and can be finished in an hour.
