About Third

You wake up in a room. A man talks through the speaker welcomes you and invites you to participate in an experimental game. However, the game is not what you thought, and you seem to be intentionally trapped. You must try to solve puzzles to escape while the creator of the game attempts to fool you. As you get deeper into the experiment, you realize that something else is wrong...

Inspired by The Witness, The Stanley Parable, and The Pervert's Guide to Ideology, Third is an 2D top-down adventure game. Explore the endless cycle and discover the deepest secret of the evil experiment.

"Third" is a student project from University of Utah. One of the first things students should be taught in game development is that 3D graphics became mainstream in the mid 1990's with dedicated 3D cards like the Voodoo3 and the ATI Rage. But the students were deliberately mistaught that's it's okay to release obsolete 2D games in the 3D era of gaming... certainly any professional developer seeing a prospective new hire who doesn't even know about 3D gaming probably isn't going to give them a job. Needless to say if an educational institution taught me incorrectly on purpose, I'd ask for my money back. This is laughably bad for any student game. It's a minimalist "art" experience, not what could be called a real game, with minimalist, phoned in graphics... seriously, if any propsective employer saw this in an applicant's portfolio, not only would they kick them out of the interview, they'd take out a restraining order. University of Utah should be ashamed by this and possibly have their credentials reviewed... this is laughably bad. The idea is that you participate in a mad scientist type lab experimental game, where you must try to solve puzzles to escape while the creator …

It's a lazy Stanley Parable clone. It's really not a good idea to tell players that they consent to your program mining their personal information, even if it's meant to be a joke.

4/10 A minimalistic "experience"-like game. Good: - it actually felt quite original, so whatever this is, the author is definitely talented - free So-so: - the gfx are minimalistic, sure. But don't look "cool". There are ways for minimalistic games to still look great. E.g. "Thomas Was Alone" - absence of any music or sfx makes this project feel lazy Bad: - I understand that the author had some great idea behind it. The issue is, it's not properly conveyed. It's really a thing that comes with experience: to be able to not just come up with an idea but also to convey it to the audience. To check if the idea is not lost on the way to the audience, one needs to playtest and listen to feedback of users before putting the game out there to get negative reviews.. - a lot of text is repeated during the forced replays from the start. Eventually I started skipping such text and clicking through it fast (since I've already read it in the previous runs) - only to accidentally skip new text! This is a common issue in VNs btw - and it's solved with the "skip" button which stops skipping once you reach text that you haven't seen yet. Since this is not a VN, at least there could be other hints…
