About To The Flame

You’re a moth on a brutal pilgrimage to meet god. Jump carefully: every chasm is a chance to fall right back to the beginning. When you see the spider, hide. It can hear your little footsteps.
The game is one big vertical level, which means you can fall right back to the beginning. We didn't make it to be cruel. We like that sweaty-palms feeling you get when you know the stakes are high. It’s a spicy feeling. We think you’ll like it too.

The spider roams the whole map. If it sees or hears you, it will chase you. If it catches you, you die. You cannot fight it, your only hope is to hide where it can’t get you.
  • Controls are simple to learn but deep and expressive once you get to know them. And especially once you get the double jump :)
  • One giant vertical level.
  • Every inch of "progress" is saved, forward and backward.
  • Condescending commentary from God.
  • 2-7 hours of pain and suffering playtime. Only one person has beaten this game in under 1.5 hours. Most people take around 5.
  • Full control remapping.
  • Almost full controller support. The only reason it's not listed that way is the graphics menu doesn't work with a controller - everything else does!
  • Slo-Mo mode, useful for new players to the genre, or for experts to practice tricks.
  • Optional challenge modes:
"No jump preview" mode which basically turns the game into Double Jump King. "Darkness" mode, where you'll need to memorize the map to succeed. Built-in speedrun timer, if you're into that kind of thing.

Short but sweet kaizo platformer with cool moth lore. ...I think this one is actually worth playing for the writing, as well as some fun platforming and excellent aesthetics. It is mercifully short, though, so short that the trailer shows most of the areas in the game. The double jump mechanic has good depth to it which makes me wish the game was longer. I still recommend it though, it's a refreshing twist on Jump King's rhythm-based platforming. You will struggle, you will fall, you will get screwed over by the placement of the spider... But as much as I hated him I think the spider is a really cool addition to a genre that is normally devoid of any monsters.
PROS:

Cute little moth protagonist that is easy to like.
Gorgeous art style and a beautiful world that feels charming and unique.
Challenging gameplay, but the developers did a great job balancing the difficulty. You can adjust the game speed, remove the spider if needed, or increase the challenge with speedrun modes, Dark Mode, and other optional modifiers.
Amazing soundtrack that perfectly matches the atmosphere of the game.
Double jump is always a welcome feature in a platformer and feels great to use here.
I played with a controller, and the controls were smooth and responsive for the most part.

CONS:

You need a lot of patience. There were several moments where I got frustrated enough to almost throw my controller.
While the jumping feels smooth, the character slides slightly after landing, which can be annoying in a precision platformer.
Some late game sections, especially those involving strong wind and difficult jumps near the end, felt more frustrating than fun.
The game saves your progress almost instantly. While this makes the experience forgiving, …
