I really didn't want to like this, but parts of it were effective and I did get through to the end. The audio and environments can be quite surreal and unsettling, even if they don't reach outright frightening. The RPG Maker elements were well done- instead of slow walking, you move quickly, and the game is playable entirely with the mouse. The real issue is with the story- the main character is an absolutely insufferable piece of garbage, and ultimately that's the point- it's just hard to care about what's happening to him moment to moment. While the writing gets the point across, the dialogue is a little rough- it feels more like a teenager writing what they think older adults sound like at the office and when discussing marital problems. The ending is interesting, and may be surprising, but I had it spoiled ahead of time so I'm not sure if I would have seen it coming or not. Ultimately, I don't know if I can say that it's worth the hour or two you'll spend on it, but it is a free title, so some folks may want to take a chance and try it.

Traum is a short psychological horror game that caught me off guard because it starts out feeling almost normal. I play as Mike, an ordinary man with a wife, a home and a boring office job, and I am basically just trying to get through the end of his day. Things slowly start getting stranger after he leaves work, and I begin exploring places like his home, the office and a hospital while trying to work out what is actually happening. I like that the game does not throw the horror at me immediately. It takes its time setting things up before the story starts getting much darker. The exploration is the part I enjoy most. There is no combat at all, so I am relying on looking around, interacting with objects and paying attention to small details. A lot of objects can be examined more than once, and some of them trigger memories that slowly give me more information about Mike and his situation. I like this because it makes ordinary things feel important. Even walking around a room and checking something I have already looked at can sometimes give me another piece of the story, so I have a reason to actually explore instead of just walking towards the next obvious objective.
