About Umihara Kawase

Note!: This is Umihara Kawase, one game in the Umihara Kawase Trilogy. It is based on the original SNES game. Below is a description of the entire trilogy.

Easy to play, difficult to master, the Umihara Kawase Trilogy is a collection of three physics-based puzzle/platformer games with over 20 years of gaming history. Developed by the creators of the original game (Kiyoshi Sakai and Toshinobu Kondo), this cult classic was a Japanese indie smash hit!

Umihara Kawase is the name of our backpacking, Japanese, sushi chef heroine armed with a fishing rod, elastic fishing line, and a fishing hook. Face fish-like enemies, conveyor belts, spikes, watery pits, time travel and more. Collect items, and find your way to the end of each level. The deeper into this dream-like world that you venture, the more challenging the solutions and the greater the time pressure becomes. Along the way, look out for shortcuts and secret exits, and unlock bonus levels.

The elasticity of Umihara’s fishing line sets the Umihara Kawase Trilogy apart from other games, giving unprecedented levels of mobility and discovery. Tightening the line or giving lots of slack can be the difference between success or failure. The elastic nature of the fishing line allows the player to stretch down to otherwise unreachable areas or be catapulted upwards.

Trilogy Features

 • Physics-based puzzle/platforming that challenges your reflexes and brainpower
 • Extreme elastic fishing-line physics give you advanced control

 • Four playable characters (in Sayonara Umihara Kawase)
 • Face giant, aquatic bosses like a tadpole, a seahorse, and more
 • Steam Achievements, Trading Cards, Leaderboards, and Cloud Saving
 • Full Steam controller support for all three games (optional)

If you like challenging old school platformers this is the game for you. Umihara Kawase is a game that will get your heart pumping as difficult trials and tribulations are thrown your way. You must pull off tricky stunts and daring maneuvers through the sky using your fishing rod as you deal with enemy spawns that constantly keep you on your toes; the excitement that this game provides is unparalleled by other titles. One thing that really makes this game stand apart from its peers is just how high the skill ceiling is. It is unbelievable seeing speedruns of this game and realizing just how quickly you can soar through levels. With the games built-in online leaderboards you are able to see just how fast players destroy each level. A level that may take a new player 3 minutes to complete can often times be beaten in 10 seconds by elite players of the game. Both on a casual and advanced scope, this game pushes players towards satisfying levels of mastery as you learn tech that allows you to make the most out of the games wild physics. Sporting 49 unique levels with 60 exits, the game has a lot of levels that allow players to really hone their skills. Replaying levels feels like a re…

I love Umihara Kawase: the insane level design and precision platforming; the near-infinite ceiling for skill expression; the mostly tough-but-fair difficulty; the calming music and laidback atmosphere; and the quirky artwork. There's a lot I hate about it, too: the unhinged amounts of RNG enemy spam in late-game levels; the all-or-nothing arcade-style gameplay (i.e. no continues when you exhaust your lives); the occasionally janky-feeling hit/hurt boxes and collision effects; and the often tedious boss fights. At its worst, it not only feels dated (it was released in 1994 after all) but downright busted. That this game won me over after repeatedly crushing my resolve is a testament to how fun and fresh it still feels. Yes, even despite the flaws (sorry, the random enemy spawning just plain sucks). If you have copious patience and enjoy a game opening up as you gain skill, this could become one of your new favorite titles. That said, I haven't been this stressed out 100%-ing a game since I beat the Pantheon of Hallownest in Hollow Knight years ago. Seriously: if you can't cope with the idea of watching 20+ minutes of progress go down the toilet, steer cl…

Your $10 rerelease of a cartoonishly difficult 30-year-old game has no save states or other quality of life features, I am pirating your game so that I do not have to waste upwards of 15 minutes replaying levels I've already beaten just to have another attempt at beating one I haven't. Whoever designed stages 8 and 14 specifically and put them right next to each other deserves to be euthanized
