UNMEMORY

Apparently, the game Unmemory was developed as a mobile experience, but with a PC version in mind as well, which I’m really glad about, since I rarely play games on my phone and probably would’ve missed this one otherwise. Come to think of it, I can definitely see this interactive thriller with puzzle-adventure elements working well on mobile. It’d be great for a long bus ride or a train trip but like I said, I’d still prefer the PC version any day. You play as someone with a strange memory disorder and after your friend is murdered, your only leads are scattered across photos, notes and audio recordings, and it’s up to you to connect the dots. So you scroll through a narrative where every word and every little detail might be crucial, not just for understanding the plot but for solving the puzzles, uncovering clues and unlocking paths to the truth. Puzzles are clever and the story pulls you in but you’ll need to bring a bit of patience, curiosity and a willingness to read. A bad port of a mobile game, not properly adapted for pc/monitor, with some parts not working properly because they were made for touch controls. Puzzles are a mixed bag, some good, some decent, some bad. As for the plot, on one hand it's your standard story with an amnesiac protagonist you've already seen in other games and media, on the other it feels like the kind of work where the authors would pat themself of the back thinking how a artsy, "progressive", anti-capitalistic story they wrote, when in reality it's a bunch of old and trite misogynist and homophobic tropes hastily put together.

I feel mixed on this title all things considered. On one hand, the high quality pictures of objects and the way it mechanically subverted the way one reads the text was a delight. On the other hand, the story and the mystery it encompassed was banal and didn't resonate with me at the end. If a narrative that leaves much to be desired doesn't stifle your interest, I would encourage you to check this out if you're up for some light reading and puzzle-solving

It's Memento.

Honestly one of the most unique games I've ever played. It was hard, and I think playing with a controller limited me a bit and made it more finicky/difficult (all on me for playing with the controller so that's not a criticism) but gosh, what a unique way of making a puzzle game! I immediately bought Delete After Reading and another by the same devs, I really adored the weird and different style of this one (for me, anyway, it was a new style of puzzle/narrative game) and appreciate the care that went into crafting this one. If you like puzzles that range in difficulty you'll dig this one, though I did have to use a walkthrough for several of the puzzles that were a bit more obtuse -- I don't mind that, though, and there are walkthroughs if you get stuck. The attention to detail was fantastic and while I do think it dragged a bit, storywise, that was the only weakness for me. I highly recommend this if you like games like Blue Prince or Lorelei and the Laser Eyes. Super unique!

I love puzzles, and this had a very unique feeling to it. The puzzles were out of the box, and the story being interactive was great.
