As a casual chess player, this game almost feels tailor-made for me. Keeps the original competitive feel of the board game even with the roguelike mechanical changes. One of the most relaxing roguelikes I've ever played too. The opponent AI for the campaign seems to make significantly more blunders than the average chess AI, so professional chess players may not find the game particularly challenging, but I felt the difficulty level was perfect considering the increased complexity compared to the board game.

This game is a typical deck builder slash roguelike. The deck builder is selecting cards that represent chess pieces to place and roguelike to unlock new pieces with untypical chess moves. You can only place pieces next to your king, which forces you to move your king often to get new pieces close to the enemy king. I think this concept sounds cool on paper. Unfortunately, this game has a 4x animation speed ... it needs like a 16x. Soooo slow ... and the music is atrocious. The game seems to be locked to fullscreen at 60 fps. I really want to play games like this in windowed mode at a lower resolution. It needs more TLC on the UX. I feel like this sort of lazy/generic presentation of the game could really benefit from better visuals to draw more interest. But I feel really annoyed that I have to stare at a nearly completely static screen with the music muted. I got it in a bundle, but I don't know if it has legs for me. I really wish steam had a meh button, but I think there is enough to dislike here to give it a no.

Like many chess games on Steam, a weird bastardization of chess that is notably worse than just playing Chess.

Got this in a chess humble bundle. The gameplay felt in the novelty fase just fine, but then quickly became a drag, but it becomes a chore to learn and remember the pieces outside of the classical chess pieces. Mechanically the game functions just fine, but to me it is not nearly satisfying enough to stick with this longer than a few hours.
